THE STREETS AROUND THIS TINY COURTHOUSE
ARE EXPECTED TO BE FILLED WITH

THOUSANDS OF PROTESTERS LATER THIS
MORNING FOR A RALLY IN SUPPORT OF 6
BLACK

TEENS ACCUSED IN THE BEATING OF A WHITE
CLASSMATE.

WHAT STARTED AS OBJECTIONS FROM LOCAL
CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS HAS ESCALATED INTO
A

NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN.

(SOT Rev. Al Sharpton 163450): "We're

coming for equal protection under the

law."

THE TROUBLE STARTED UNDER THIS TREE.

Susan Roberts/Stand-Up:

THE INFAMOUS TREE HERE ON THE SCHOOL'S
CAMPUS HAS BEEN CUT DOWN. RACIAL

TENSIONS BEGAN ESCALATING WHEN THREE
WHITE STUDENTS HUNG NOOSES FROM IT
WHICH

THEY VIEWED AS THEIR TERRITORY....AFTER
A BLACK STUDENT HAD ASKED TO SIT UNDER

IT.

(nats)

THE STUDENTS SAID IT WAS A PRANK BUT
MANY WEREN'T LAUGHING.

(SOT Marcus Jones/Mychal Bell's

father): "So it was a joke to them but
it

wasn't to us because we know what that
meant - so many of our people was hung

in the past, and that's no joking
matter."

TODAY'S MARCH WAS TO COINCIDE WITH THE
SENTENCING OF MYCHAL BELL, CONVICTED OF

BATTERY, BUT HIS CONVICTION WAS
OVER-TURNED FRIDAY BY A STATE COURT.

THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY DENIED RACE WAS A
FACTOR AND URGED EVERYONE NOT TO

FORGET THE VICTIM.

(SOT J. Reed Walters/LaSalle Parish

District Attorney 213800): "The injury

that was done to him and the serious
threats to his survival have become
less

than a footnote."

AND WHILE MANY HERE JUST WANT TO GET

BACK TO NORMAL---

(SOT Gary Stapleton/resident 172017

FONT EARLY): "The blacks and whites
ain't

got no problem here.....The media has
blowed this way out of proportion."

--OTHERS SAY THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

(SOT Katrina Wallace/resident): "If it

goes back to normal, nothing's solved.

Still got tensions regardless."

AFTER THIS SLEEPY TOWN FILLS UP AND
EMPTIES, EVERYONE HOPES ITS IMAGE AS A

SYMBOL OF RACIAL HATRED CAN BE REMOVED
AS EASILY AS A SCHOOLYARD OAK TREE.
