custody, Clarence Beard's family and
friends say he did not die in vain.

Sept. 24th, 2006 Beard died of apparent heart
failure when police say he resisted
arrest inside this James Crossing
apartment last September.
An outside investigation later
cleared the police of any wrongdoing,
but many in Lynchburg's black community
weren't satisfied with that decision.
About two dozen people marched
outside Beard's old apartment this
afternoon in Beard's memory.
His fiancee says she's moved on,
but will never forget.

golf tournaments in the Roanoke Valley
each year that are put on for
charitable causes.
One such event took place today
at Ashley Plantation as 196 golfers
gathered to raise funds for folks who
have suffered brain injuries.

This year alone more than $87
thousand dollars were raised to help
individuals suffering from the effects
of brain injuries in 23 different
counties in Southwest Virginia during
the two two flight event at Ashley.
But unlike so many tournaments,
this one in very unique in that each
foursome that participates also
includes a team member who in some way
has suffered a brain injury.

for the king of drag racing is good.
John Force - spent six hours in
surgery today following a wreck
yesterday's NHRA Fall Nationals in
Texas.

NHRA-ESPN Force has a compound fracture of
:00 his left ankle, a lacerated right knee,
a dislocated left wrist and abrasions
on two fingers on his right hand. He
had screws inserted into his ankle and
temporary pins placed in his wrist,
said David Densmore, publicist for John
Force Racing. Force will miss the rest
of the NHRA season, which has three
scheduled dates remaining including one
in Richmond.
The 14-time champion, wrecked
Sunday while racing Funny Car rival
Kenny Bernstein. Bernstein's car
drifting toward Force's lane and
striking a foam timing block, which
shot into the back of Force's car.
Force swerved across Bernstein's lane
into the retaining wall. Bernstein then
rammed into Force's car, breaking the
chassis in two.

Peninsula are dealing with a criminal
gang of about 250 responsible for
countless burglaries, thefts and acts
of mindless vandalism.

is protecting the suspects.
Why you ask? the suspects are the
country's last colony of coastal
baboons.. a protected species - has
taken to foraging in houses and parked
cars.
They've figured out how to open car
doors, get through barred windows and
even know where the fridge is.
They even seem to enjoy the havoc
they create, bounding playfully across
roof-tops and swinging from gutters.
The latest control measure involves a
man with a whistle trying to coax or
herd the troop away from the
residential areas.
