Liberty Road bridge on Interstate 581
was hit.
Now the necessary repairs are under
way.

truck driver headed south slammed into
the overpass.
It didn't cause any serious damage
but there was plenty of concern in
light of the recent bridge collapse in
Minneapolis.

V-Dot crews are fixing the steel
cables inside the bridge that were
damaged during the recent accident.
They're also replacing some of the
concrete on the beam of the bridge.
This isn't the first time the Liberty
Road overpass has needed repairs.
In fact, the bridge has been hit six
times in the last five years.
As a result, the bridge is considered
structurally deficient.
Even so, V-Dot insists the bridge is
safe but admits it will eventually need
long term repairs.
However, that's easier said than
done.

the beams but as they say nothing is
set in stone.

about adding more signage to better
warn drivers about the height of the
bridge but there are no definite plans
at this time.
NATASHA QUESTION:
Justin, just wondering, how much are
these repairs costing?
JUSTIN ANSWER:
Natasha, it's about 55-thousand
dollars but keep in mind tax payers are
not footing the bill. The state is
recouping the costs from the insurance
company of the driver who hit this
bridge.

Junior wants to build a new kennel on
61 acres he owns in the White Gate
community.
Last night, the Giles County
planning commission recommended the
board of supervisors deny his special
exception request.
Schmucker (SCHMYOO-KER) told
administrators he wants to move to be
closer to other Amish families in Giles
County.
This past March, one of
Schmucker's Dogwood Kennels burned.
He lost about 200 dogs in the
fire.
More than 4-thousand people
signed an online petition against the
business.
Giles County Administrators said

nearby land owners about the request.

cold front is forecast to cross the
area Thursday, and will bring some
changes to the overall warm pattern.
Clouds will increase Thursday with a
few showers during the afternoon and

identifying, was driving on Highland
Road around 3:00 yesterday, when she
saw the driver of this car, lose
control, hit an embankment and flip
over on its top.

later in a field in Radford.

dealing a major mess tonight involving
a cheating scandal involving more than
20 athletes.
Two athletic department academic
assistants at FSU have resigned and 23
Florida State University athletes have
been implicated in cheating on tests
given over the Internet. Apparently a
tutor sat with the athletes while they
took tests and supplied them correct
answers.
School officials say the athletes
represent nine sports and that 17 of
the students are on scholarship or have
been at some time. The students could
face punishment from the university and
the NCAA, including the loss of
eligibility and scholarships.
However, due to federal
confidentiality restrictions officials
cannot identify the students
