are headed back to General Motors
plants across the country after a
tentative deal was reached overnight.

Rank and file members still need to
ratify the agreement.one that for the
first time puts the responsibility for
administering retiree s health care
benefits in the hands of the union. GM
will fund about 70 percent of the new
trust fund known as VEBA.

successfully resolved a lot of
difficult

In a statement, GM called the
bargaining sessions complex,but said
the
tentative agreement paves the way for
the automaker to significantly improve
its manufacturing competitiveness.
Additional details have not been
officially released, but a person
briefed on
the agreement says wages would stay the
same for the length of the 4-year
contract. Workers would receive
bonuses and lump sum payments.
Some say ratification is not automatic.

board of supervisors deny Ivan

He wants to build a new kennel on
61 acres he owns in the White Gate
community.

administrators he wants to move to be
closer to other Amish families in Giles
County.
This past March, one of
Schmucker's Dogwood Kennels burned.
He lost about 200 dogs in the
fire.
More than 4-thousand people
signed an online petition against the
business.
Giles County Administrators said
they have received letters of concern
from nearby land owners about the
request.

proving to feel more like summer. Highs
will push toward the upper 80s again
this afternoon with mostly sunny skies.
There's only a slight chance of a stray
afternoon shower across southwestern
Virginia. A cold front forecast to
cross the area Thursday will bring some
changes to the local forecast. Look for
more clouds Thursday and a chance of a
few showers. Unfortunately, "rain"
won't be the primary weather-maker with
this boundary. Most of the wet weather
will stay to the north and west of the
Old Dominion. Once the front passes to
the east, expect rapid clearing for
Friday and the upcoming weekend, with

foundation called "Together for Kids."

embattled NFL star Michael Vick. A
grand jury from Surry County has
indicted Vick and three co- defendants
on STATE dogfighting charges.
Vick's former coach, Frank Beamer
says these latest charges are
upsetting, but he hopes his former
