the elementary and high school level.

of Virginia's 314 middle schools are
fully accredited.
State educators say the problem
is math, students are having trouble
preparing for algebra and geometry.
On the very day these numbers
were released, Governor Kaine addressed
a P-T-A group in Roanoke.
Afterwards we asked him why that
age group is NOT making the grade.

the clear tonight, after facing the
prospect of losing state accreditation.

A couple of weeks ago we told you
about the problems at Forest Park
Elementary, Lucy Addison Middle and
Stonewall Jackson Middle School.
Each of those schools has failed
to win accreditation ...four years in a
row.
The state has now decided to
grant it on a conditional basis.
That means they have three more
years to raise student achievement.
This also means the state board
will not step in and make sweeping
changes.

yesterday explaining the situation ...
both students diagnosed with the
infection are receiving treatment and
the school has been thoroughly cleaned.
A spokesman says one of the
students is a female athlete who has
been barred from actively participating

But she is allowed to sit on the
bench with her team during games.

this month there.

Police say a man driving a farm
truck ran a stop sign and slammed into
Thomas on Route 52.
That driver, Jason Cole of Fancy
Gap, told police he lost his brakes

and hit the other truck on the driver's
side.
No word on any charges against
Cole.

hurt.

speed limit increase on a major road in
Giles County.

signs along 15 miles of Route 460.
The speed limit has gone up to 65
miles an hour around Pearisburg.
And it's increased from 50 to 55
on three other sections of the road.
State Police say drivers need to

West Virginia State line.
An estimated 10-thousand cars a
day travel sections of 460 in Giles
County.
It's a major route for commuters
in the N-R-V.
Police say, so far, there have
been no major crashes since the
changeover.

"Farmer Hokie" and it was ripped from
its base in early April.

the month will be fall-like with plenty

undergoing some changes. Look for
variably cloudy skies between now and
early Friday morning as a cold front
crosses the NEWS7 viewing area from the
Ohio Valley. The front will also bring
a scattering of showers and storms to
the region, but some of us will stay

pressure returns Friday with sunny

asked President Bush to award the
Presidential Medal of Freedom
posthumously to Liviu Librescu
(LIHV'-yoo lih-BRESS'-koo).
The Holocaust survivor was one of
five teachers killed at Virginia Tech
on April 16th.
The 76- year- old died trying to
keep his students safe.
The Governor calls Librescu's
story "powerful."

Head Coach Butch Davis.
The hiring of the former Miami
Head Coach hasn't translated into
immediate victories for the Tar Heels

Race Teams. Over a hundred Late Model
Drivers and cars will be rolling into
the Track on Friday for the Bailey's
3-hundred on Sunday.

maybe Tink Reedy. He is back at the
Track after taking a left turn to the
Hospital.

Reedy will be the oldest driver

decades.

and the 200 lap main event are set for
Saturday at 12:30.
