A Lexington police officer has
helped crack a theft ring that hit
colleges up and down the East Coast.

The thefts easily run into
hundreds of thousands of dollars ..
perhaps half a million.

The most recent burglary happened

First Source Bank in South Bend,
Indiana, says it's suffered damages of
at least two million dollars.
The suit says Vick signed loan
agreements to purchase 130 vehicles for
a car rental business and is not paying

Blacksburg has released some
information regarding our hot and dry
September. While no rainfall records
were set, Blacksburg will tie for the
7th lowest September rainfall on
record. Roanoke will be the 8th lowest
on record. Danville and Lynchburg had a
little more rain this month, so they
will only be tied for the 17th and 18th
driest on record respectively. Roanoke
had 10 days of 90 degree (or higher)
heat this month. The record is 11 days
in 1998 and 1954. Danville had 14 days
of 90 degree (or higher) heat this
month. The record there is 17 days in
1954. No more 90 degree days are
expected this month. It should be
noted, the period of record is only
around a half century in Roanoke,
Danville and Blacksburg. Lynchburg
temperature records date back to 1893.

and an unusual salamander is living
there as a result.

VO-NAT It's the Piney River area near
NO SUPER the Amherst-Nelson County, about
half-way between Lynchburg and
Charlottesville.
The area is home to the "Mole
Salamander"
It starts with the thick clay
that makes up the topsoil in that area.
The clay makes digging a well
tough... but is perfect for creating
wetlands that are home to all kinds of
creatures.
One of them is the rare
salamander species which makes its home
right next to a busy rock quarry.

a family.
But it's here where the thick clay
holds rainwater, creating wetlands --
or vernal pools -- which are home to
some rare species of freshwater shrimp
and the mole salamander.

OUT Q=that we've encountered. With Boxley Materials constantly
expanding, this vernal pool and the
creatures in it could be in the way ...
which presented the company and
Hayslett with a unique problem.
IN Q=Like most amphibians Like most amphibians, the mole
salamander imprints on the soil in
which it's born, and it returns to that
exact same soil as an adult to
reproduce. So when it came to moving
the salamander out of harm's way, Mike
Hayslett says simply creating a new
wetland was not an option.
OUT Q=not an option. So instead, with Boxley's help,
they picked it up and moved it ...
about six inches worth of topsoil ...
to a much quieter part of the property.
Add a few plants and about
10-thousand gallons of water and you
have a new vernal pool with a very
familiar feel.

horse is finally getting a bath and a
dye job... some 140 years after he
died.

Conservators are in Lexington,
spending two weeks working on Little
Sorrel.
The horse survived the
Civil War, though his famous owner did
not. The horse died in 1886.
The hide was preserved,
stretched over a plaster body and put
on public display.
