of Virginia's 314 middle schools are
fully accredited.

State educators say the problem
is math, students are having trouble
preparing for algebra and geometry.

On the very day these numbers
were released, Governor Tim Kaine
addressed a P-T-A group in Roanoke.

Afterwards we asked him why that
age group is NOT making the grade.

the clear, after facing the prospect of
losing state accreditation.

A couple of weeks ago we told you
about the problems at Forest Park
Elementary, Lucy Addison Middle and
Stonewall Jackson Middle School.

Each of those schools has failed
to win accreditation ...four years in a
row.

The state has now decided to
grant it on a conditional basis.

That means they have three more
years to raise student achievement.

This also means the state board

will not step in and make sweeping
changes.

19th in the Seattle area was found
alive in her crashed vehicle.

Tanya TAWN-ya Rider was last seen
at her job last week.

Yesterday investigators tracked
the woman's cell phone signal to an
area near Renton, Washington.

They found Rider's Honda Element
crashed down an embankment and that she

was in the car and alive.

Police say it's a miracle she
survived that long without water and
food.

increased on a major road in Giles

County.

signs along 15 miles of Route 460.

The speed limit has gone up to 65
miles an hour around Pearisburg.

And it's increased from 50 to 55
on three other sections of the road.

State Police say drivers need to
pay attention because the speed changes
quite a bit between Blacksburg and the
West Virginia State line.

An estimated 10-thousand cars a
day travel sections of 460 in Giles
County.

It's a major route for commuters
in the N-R-V.

Police say, so far, there have
been no major crashes since the
changeover.

drinking for women.

New research shows that three or more
drinks a day increases a woman's chance
of getting breast cancer.

Beer, wine, or hard liquor all seemed
to have the same effect ... and the

study likened the risk of three drinks
a day to a pack-a-day cigarette habit.

A new study found that in 5-percent of
cases, arthritis in one knee appeared
to be the first sign of lung cancer.

In these cases, the arthritis
completely disappeared after lung
cancer surgery, confirming the two were
linked.

Researchers advise doctors to order a
chest X-ray every time they see a heavy
smoker with mild knee arthritis.

This may come as no surprise ... but
new research has solidified the tie
between obesity and the family tree.

A study of nine year olds found that
children who had overweight mothers
were much more likely to have a higher
percentage of body fat than their
peers.

The research tracked the body mass
index of moms starting before
pregnancy.

It also turns out ... the amount of
weight the mothers gained during

pregnancy had NO impact on their
child's B-M-I.

staph infection MRSA at Jefferson
Forest High School in Bedford
County.....

parents Wednesday explaining the

situation.

Both students diagnosed with the
infection are receiving treatment and
the school has been thoroughly cleaned.

A spokesman says one of the
students is a female athlete who has
been barred from actively participating

until the infection clears up.

But she is allowed to sit on the
bench with her team during games.

its base in early April.

County has resulted in the sixth
fatality this month there.

VO-NAT Edward Thomas of Cana was killed

just before 11 yesterday morning.

Police say a man driving a farm
truck ran a stop sign and slammed into
Thomas on Route 52.

increased on a major road in Giles
County.

signs along 15 miles of Route 460.

The speed limit has gone up to 65
miles an hour around Pearisburg.

And it's increased from 50 to 55
on three other sections of the road.

State Police say drivers need to
pay attention because the speed changes
quite a bit between Blacksburg and the
West Virginia State line.

An estimated 10-thousand cars a
day travel sections of 460 in Giles
County.

It's a major route for commuters
in the N-R-V.

Police say, so far, there have
been no major crashes since the
changeover.

Another bad accident in Carroll County
has resulted in the sixth fatality this
month there. Edward Thomas of Cana
was killed just before 11 yesterday
morning.

Police say a man driving a farm
truck ran a stop sign and slammed into
Thomas on Route 52. That driver, Jason
Cole of Fancy Gap, told police he lost
his brakes coming down the hill.

of Virginia students are headed to a
Montgomery County grand jury. The
