THE COURT WILL GRAPPLE WITH A HOST OF
CASES THAT COULD HAVE IMMENSE
IMPLICATIONS FOR EVERYTHING FROM THE
WAR ON TERROR TO HOW WE ALL VOTE. THE
HIGHEST PROFILE CASE UP FOR REVIEW IS A
CHALLENGE FROM THE DETAINEES HELD AS
ENEMY COMBATANTS AT GUANTANOMO BAY,
CUBA. 3 YEARS AGO, THE JUSTICES RULED
THE RIGHT TO CONTEST ILLEGAL DETENTION
BE EXTENDED TO THE DETAINEES. BUT LAST
YEAR'S REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED CONGRESS
CHANGED THE LAW TO DENY THEM THE RIGHT.
NOW THE COURT FACES A HISTORIC DECISION
ON WHETHER TO OVERRULE BOTH THE
PRESIDENT AND CONGRESS ON A WAR-RELATED
MATTER. THE COURT WILL ALSO WADE INTO
THE BATTLE OVER THE DEATH PENALTY, FOR
THE FIRST TIME CONSIDERING WHETHER
LETHAL INJECTION CONSTITUES CRUEL AND
UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT. TWO KENTUCKY DEATH
ROW-INMATES ARGUE THE METHOD INFLICTS
UNNECESSARY PAIN AND SUFFERING. SIMILAR
COURT BATTLES ARE HAPPENING IN AT LEAST
2 OTHER STATES....AND 10 STATES HAVE
SUSPENDED THE PRACTICE. LEGAL ANALYSTS
SAY GIVEN THE COURT'S CONSERVATIVE
MAJORITY, THEY WILL LIKELY RULE IN
FAVOR OF THE NEEDLE. (SOT Jonathan
Turley/Professor, George Washington
University): "This is not the court and
not the time to present this case. So
far anti-death penalty advocates this
is not good news that the court
accepted this case." AND IN A DEBATE
THAT MAY CHANGE HOW WE CAST OUR
BALLOTS, THE COURT WILL HEAR A
CHALLENGE TO AN INDIANA LAW THAT
REQUIRES VOTERS TO SHOW PHOTO I-Ds AT
THE POLLS. SUCH LAWS HAVE BEEN BILLED
AS FIGHTING VOTER FRAUD, BUT CRITICS
SAY THE RESTRICTION IS HARD ON POOR
VOTERS, WHO ARE LESS LIKELY TO TO HAVE
DRIVERS' LICENSES AND MORE LIKELY TO
VOTE DEMOCRATIC. (oncam) AND THAT CASE
CHALLENGING THE VOTER ID LAW SHOULD BE
HEARD JUST IN TIME FOR 2008'S PIVOTAL
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS. IN WASHINGTON -

fat? How about bad enough to diminish
your body's ability to defend itself
against heart disease.
(vo)
A recent study found just that reaction
after participants ate only one piece
of high-fat carrot cake and drank a
milkshake.
Comparing blood samples taken before
and after the meal, researchers found
the fat-laden feast compromised the
ability of arteries to resist the
build-up of fatty plaques that, over
time, clogs blood vessels and causes
heart disease.
(wipevo)
A new study reports that people who do
not get enough sleep are more than
twice as likely to die of heart
disease.
Although the reasons are unclear,
researchers said lack of sleep appeared
to be linked to increased blood
pressure, which is known to raise the
risk of heart attacks and stroke.
(wipevo)
Getting an annual flu shot may not save
the lives of seniors, and experts want
to look at other ways to protect the
elderly.
While no studies have proven influenza
shots prevent flu-related deaths in
people over 65, researchers stress the
elderly should continue to get the
shots but said health officials should
also be looking for other ways to
prevent some of the 36,000 deaths every
year.

fat? How about bad enough to diminish

against heart disease.
(vo)
A recent study found just that reaction
after participants ate only one piece
of high-fat carrot cake and drank a
milkshake.
Comparing blood samples taken before
and after the meal, researchers found
the fat-laden feast compromised the
ability of arteries to resist the
build-up of fatty plaques that, over
time, clogs blood vessels and causes
heart disease.
(wipevo)
A new study reports that people who do
not get enough sleep are more than
twice as likely to die of heart
disease.
Although the reasons are unclear,
researchers said lack of sleep appeared
to be linked to increased blood
pressure, which is known to raise the
risk of heart attacks and stroke.

Getting an annual flu shot may not save
the lives of seniors, and experts want
to look at other ways to protect the
elderly.
While no studies have proven influenza
shots prevent flu-related deaths in
people over 65, researchers stress the
elderly should continue to get the
shots but said health officials should
also be looking for other ways to
prevent some of the 36,000 deaths every
year.

THE RIGHT TO CONTEST ILLEGAL DETENTION
BE EXTENDED TO THE DETAINEES. BUT LAST

NOW THE COURT FACES A HISTORIC DECISION

MATTER. THE COURT WILL ALSO WADE INTO
THE BATTLE OVER THE DEATH PENALTY, FOR
THE FIRST TIME CONSIDERING WHETHER
LETHAL INJECTION CONSTITUES CRUEL AND
UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT. TWO KENTUCKY DEATH

UNNECESSARY PAIN AND SUFFERING. SIMILAR
COURT BATTLES ARE HAPPENING IN AT LEAST

not the time to present this case. So

is not good news that the court
