defense this morning as he showed a
Roanoke jury what led up to a fatal
shooting five years ago.
Workman is on trial a second time
for killing Keith Bailey at O'Charley's
near Valley View Mall.
Workman says Bailey charged
toward him as he was getting out of a
car- -the vehicle of a woman Workman
had spent the evening talking with
inside at the bar.

an "assassination."
Commissioner Sylvester Johnson says
the gunman never gave the guards a
chance to give up the money to avoid
being killed. The gunman took off and

Johnson says the two guards were
both retired
Philadelphia police officers and
lifelong friends.

Junior asked for a special exception to
build a new kennel on 61 acres her owns
in the White Gate community.
He told administrators he wanted
to move to be closer to other Amish
families who live in that area.
Last month, the Giles County
planning commission recommended the
board of supervisors deny his request
saying it may have a negative effect on
neighborhood property values and there
was no current or future need for the
kennel.
This past March, one of
Schmucker's (SCHMOOU-KER) Dogwood
Kennels burned.
He lost about 200 dogs in the
fire.
After that, more than 4-thousand
people signed an online petition
against the business.

women who are pregnant or want to
become pregnant to eat a certain amount
of fish weekly to help their baby's
development.
The problem is the recommendation

just 12 ounces a week to avoid mercury.
The federal agency says it will now
study the coalition's new

over the exact amount of fish to eat
will likely continue. But experts do
agree.... it's very important for
pregnant women to pick the right type

fish like salmon, catfish, shrimp and

migrating hawks along the Blue Ridge
Mountains. 30 years later, the the
tradition carries on. Meteorologist
Brent Watts has their story on today's

annual trip south.

hawkwatching since the mid 70s up
here.))
The members aren't just watching, but
counting every hawk they see. And the
numbers may surprise you.
((BILL JAMES: We had an unusual number
of broadwing hawks, we had 4,100 in one
day. That was the second highest total
that we've seen, since we've been
counting up here.))
Climate and weather conditions are the
main influence on bird migration
patterns. As the days get shorter,
hawks look for strong northwest winds
to produce updrafts. This strong,
rising air can keep birds in the sky
for hundreds of miles without them ever
flapping their wings.
Harvey's Knob is one of the highest
peeks on the Parkway. You can see both
sides, whether the winds are coming
from the east or the northwest.

the hawks and see how they fly, how
they migrate. We see other migrants up
here, smaller birds and butterflies.))

In honor of Breast Cancer
Awareness month - more than 150 women
stepped on five area tennis courts
today to score points for more than
their doubles' partners.
Today, the serves and volleys
were all done to raise funds and
awareness locally in the fourth annual
Pink Ribbon tennis tournament.

Since its orgination the
tournament has raised more than $30
thousand dollars annually for the
American Cancer Society with this one
day event.
Five area tennis facilities
throughout the valley play host to the
round-robin matches and then thousands
of dollars are raised through silent
and LIVE auctions at the Hidden Valley
Country Club.

is appearing in a play at the Radford
University.
Schuck toured on Broadway in
Annie and is best known for his
appearances in the Mash movie and the
TV series McMillan and Wife.
He's working with RU students on
the play "All My Sons."
