smoke billowing through the tree tops
and quickly realized the fate of that
pilot.

airport when the pilot Ranson Pelt Jr.
flew out around 12:45.
Bailey also heard Pelt's call for
help.

That was just enough for airport
staff to take action.
They immediately called 9-1-1.
By the time a rescue team
arrived, Pelt's passenger was dead.
Pelt was badly burned but made it
out of the wreckage.
Unsettling news for Bailey who
frequently sees the pilot come through
this airport.
Bailey has always known him as a
nice person.

roadways....it proved to be a deadly
weekend.

One person was killed around noon
in this car crash in Roanoke County.
The wreck was near the Dixie
Caverns Exit off of Interstate 81.
At this point, police believe an
SUV was pulling out from Dow Hollow
Road and hit the wheel of a Kroger
truck.
Police say the force of the truck
pushed the jeep into the guardrail.
The driver Mary Maxey was not
wearing a seat belt and was thrown from
the jeep.
She died and emergency crews took
her two passengers to the hospital.

have an affect on crops...this time
it's the peanut.
While they are usually more
tolerant of dry conditions, the
statewide drought proved too much this
growing season.
Because the lack of rain has made
the ground hard like concrete peanut
farmers report the vines could barely
worm their way into the ground and when
they did they just dried up.
The harvest began last week.

crews put on a very lively

The anger over the sale of artwork at
Randolph College in Lynchburg has
reached all the way to South Korea.
A graduate now living there is furious:

auction off art work of such intrinsic
cultural and historical value does not
deserve to own it. I am utterly
disgusted by Randolph College's lack of
vision and inability to perceive and
appreciate that which is truly of
value. "

After a hot Sunday, expect a clear to
partly cloudy night with lows near 60.
Some patchy dense fog will develop,
especially across the New River Valley
and in the Highlands by Monday morning.
After a foggy start, a large ridge will
slowly move to the south, pumping in a
warm south/southwest wind, which will
set the stage for more record warmth.
Highs Monday and Tuesday are forecast
near 90. A strong cold front enters the
area late Tuesday into Wednesday. While
the front won't bring much needed rain,
it will begin to knock our temperatures
out of record territory. Highs
Wednesday are forecast around the low
80s. Sharply cooler temperatures are
forecast by Thursday and Friday (highs
in the 60s) as an upper level low
develops close to the Great Lakes. A
few showers may fall just to the west

night was tempered a bit today by the
news that starting linebacker Vince
Hall will miss the next 4 to 6 weeks
with a broken left wrist.

He'll have surgery tonight at
Montgomery Regional Hospital to have a
plate inserted for stability. Hall is
the Hokies leading tackler with 61 this

GRAPHIC=Talladega The bump draft was in full effect
today at Talladega, where the Car of
Tomorrow made its superspeedway debut
in the UAW Ford 500.

Engine failures were a big
story in this one. First Jeff Burton
blew up, just about ending his shot at
the Championship.
Then Martin Truex, Jr. went up
in smoke as he lost some serious ground
in the points race.

Labonte got loose, hit Kyle Busch and
then Robby Gordon, and the fun was on
from there. 10 cars were tangled and
mangled, including those of chasers
Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth.
In the end, Jeff Gordon was
out front when it counted. He took the
checkered flag, beating his teammate
Jimmie Johnson and Dave Blaney for his
5th win of the season and first since
June at Pocono. And Gordon now owns
the points lead as well.
