(END SOT) Tasers subdue by shooting 50-thousand

volts of electricity into a person....

disrupting the nervous system and
causing a temporary loss of muscle

Peter Doench a reporter for Miami C-B-S
Affiliate W-F-O-R remembers how it

feels.... he volunteered to be tasered
by police for a story. :09

(SOT-Peter Doench/Reporter)

"(tells us how it feels)." :06

But do tasers harm the body afterward?.

A new study finds almost never. :04

(SOT- Dr. William Bozeman/Wake Forest

University)

"WE WERE ACTUALLY SUPRISED." :02

Doctors at Wake Forest University
looked at almost 1-thousand cases and
found

serious injuries occurred less than one
percent of the time. :07

44:05 (SOT-Dr. William Bozeman/Wake

Forest University)

"SUBJECTS HAD EITHER NO INJURIES OR
MILD INJURIES SUCH AS BRUISES OR
SCRAPES."

:06

Those mild injuries often came from
falls.... or the taser's probes.

The electricity itself was not
implicated. :05

(STANDUP: Dr. Sean Kenniff/CBS
NEWS/Miami, FL)

Despite the study results some health
experts still question the safety of

tasers.

In recent years there's been a growing

number of reports of people dying after

getting hit with the electricity. :11
(1:01)

(NATS)

However, the coroner often found
something else was to blame.

For example two people In the Wake
Forest study had died but... :06

47:30 (SOT-Dr. William Bozeman/Wake

Forest University)

"AFTER THE AUTOPSIES WERE DONE THE
TASER WAS NOT IMPLICATED IN NEITHER OF

THOSE DEATHS." :04

(NATS)

Every police officer given a taser...
has to experience the feeling first
hand.

Officer Frank Jackson has gone through
it.

(SOT-Frank Jackson/Coral Gables PD)

"AFTER ABOUT FIVE SECOND AFTER THE
SHOCK IS OVER YOU FEEL NORMAL.." :04
(1:23)

And that's all the assurance he needs

to know tasers are safe.

The goal is to collect and
recycle 100 tons of electronics
statewide... that's 200-thousand pounds

of old computers, televisions, cell
phones and other out-dated electronic
devices.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
have been set aside businesses and
schools to unload their ewaste at
Hollins University, Virignia Tech,
University of Richmond or ODU.

On Saturday, the general public
is invited to do the same.

If not recycled, all of the
ewaste ends up in our landfills or
going overseas to countries where it
creates an environmental nightmare.

Toxins materials such as lead and

mercury can seep into groundwater.

Through recycling, only two
percent goes back into the landfill.

businesses do need to register online
to help with the logistics.

We have the site linked to ours.

will have before recycling their old
computer is the security of the data
that remains on the hard drives.

The recycling company handling
the job guarantees the personal
information will be completely removed
and destroyed.

OQ=...Mike Stevens News 7 Sports <

the stands at Lane Stadium this season
you've gotten your money's worth in the
pregame alone - thanks in part to the
efforts of Col. Rock Roazak.

The Associate Director of Alumni
Relations for the Corps of Cadets is
responsible for doing the behind the
scenes leg work that made three
flyovers featuring three very different
types of aircraft a reality in
September.

COL. ROCK ROSZAK

Most of those units who seek out
Tech - are full of Tech alums - and
that makes the the flyover twice as
special.

COL. ROCK ROSZAK

It's really special when the
aircraft hits just at the right time -
the end of the national anthem.

To help coordinate that - an
advance team - in direct radio contact
with the pilot is positioned on top of
Lane Stadium.

COL. ROCK ROSZAK

While it may seem a bit strange
to have this many flyovers in war time,
Col. Roszak says not so.

Not all of the nation's aricraft is
deployed in the war zone, and the Air
Force sees these type of events as
extremely important recruiting tools.
