(END SOT) .

With the strike deadline just hours
away, the United Auto Workers and
Chrysler

are locked in negotiations that will
determine whether workers hit the

ASSEMBLY line or the PICKET line.

The union set a deadline of 11 A-M this

morning to reach an agreement or

49-thousand workers across the country
will walk off the job.

(nats)

Their contract expired last month and
in a memo to union leaders, the U-A-W

warned it will not continue to extend
the agreement, saying (gfx) -- QUOTE --

"the company has thus far failed to
make an offer that adequately addresses

the needs of our membership." (/gfx)

Health care for the workers and
78-thousand retirees is the big issue.

(:41-:50 SOT CHARLES SPENCER/PRESIDENT,

UAW LOCAL 122, TWINSBURG, OHIO): "THE

U-A-W HAS BEEN TAKING CARE OF
HEALTHCARE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE
GRAVE. SO

THIS IS SOMETHING WE WANT TO CONTINUE
EVEN THOUGH WE GOT NEW OWNERS."

Those new owners are the private equity
firm Cerberus Capital Management,

which bought Chrysler from the German
automaker Daimler in August. No one

knows if they will act like auto

companies of the past.

Analysts say Chrysler, which lost
680-million-dollars last year, is not
in a

position to grant job guarantees the
union wants.

(nats)

Chrysler's deadline comes as union
members at G-M wrap up voting on their
own

deal reached 2 weeks ago after a 2-day
strike. That agreement is expected to

be approved. G-M's deal is important
to Chrysler as bargaining talks with

Detroit automakers typically mirror
each other.

(oncam)

And in a move that shows neither side
is being spared the pain, Chrysler has

announced plans to cut about 15-hundred
more white-collar jobs than initially

planned.
