GRAPHIC=None An initial report of an assault
has led to a homicide investigation in
Danville.
Around 11:00 last night, officers
responded to a call in the 200 block of
Popular Street to find a man suffering
from injuries to his head and abdomen.
The man was transported to the
Danville Regional Medical Center, where
he later died.
The man has been identified as
Reginald Lee Fitzgerald of Danville. He
was 49.

a Bedford County teenager who died in a
car accident.
The medical examiner says
19-year-old Samantha Bittler died
instantly when her car ran off the
road.

A passing truck driver spotted the
wreckage of Bittler's car Wednesday in
a ravine off Route 460 near Montvale.
Bittler had been thrown from her
car and died from head, chest and neck
trauma.
A Bedford County sheriff's deputy
had actually responded to the scene on
Monday, October 1st, but did not see
the car.

program that helps get rid of trash on
the roadways.
Inmates are picking up junk and
debris several day a week from the
bypass and the exit ramps on Interstate
81.
They work in groups of five under
the watch of an armed sheriff's deputy.

By planting flowers and plants,
it will help improve the environment by
naturally cooling the building.
That will cut down on energy

The plane was landing when it
crashed.
Another Yoder son was waiting on
his father and brothers to arrive when
he saw the accident, called 9-1-1 and
rushed to help.
First responders said all three
men were talking when they got there,
but probably had some broken bones.
Something investigators say isn't
common for a plane crash like this.

Human remains found in Giles
County last weekend might be those of a
crash victim.

December 1996 A man found a femur bone on East
River Mountain just outside of Narrows.
It was in the middle of the crash
site from December 22nd, 1996.
6 people were heading to
Wilmington, Ohio when their D-C-8
nose-dived.
Everyone was killed and the
debris was spread out over 2 acres.
Police have sent the bone to the
medical examiner's office in Roanoke,
but it could be months before we know
if it is from a crash victim.

warning families to avoid enrolling
teenagers in youth boot camp until
there's more oversight.
There are thousands of allegations
of abuse at the camps since the early
'90s.

today in the case of a 14 year old boy
who died after a struggle with boot
camp guards.
Video of guards hitting and kneeling
on Martin Lee Anderson a day before he
died ignited outrage over his

Prosecutors allege the guards
suffocated Anderson by covering his
mouth, and making him inhale ammonia.
Those involved face as many as 30
years in prison, if convicted of
manslaughter.

out at the Bad Wolf Barbecue on
Williamson Road.
Investigators say that fire was
intentionally set.
The restaurant had heavy smoke
damage.... estimated at nearly

Managers say they'll try to
re-open the restaurant within the next

Michael Chase was dropped off at the
Salem V-A Medical Center Wednesday
morning and hasn't been seen since his
appointment there.

has led to a homicide investigation in
Danville
Around 11:00 last night, officers
responded to a call in the 200 block of
Popular Street to find a man suffering
from injuries to his head and abdomen.
The man was transported to the
Danville Regional Medical Center, where
he later died.
The man has been identified as
Reginald Lee Fitzgerald of Danville. He
was 49.

GRAPHIC=Bittler Autopsy Report Funeral arrangements are set for
a Bedford County teenager who died in a
car accident.
The medical examiner says
19-year-old Samantha Bittler died
instantly when her car ran off the
road...but it would take another nine
days to find her body.

A passing truck driver spotted the
wreckage of Bittler's car Wednesday in
a ravine off Route 460 near Montvale.
Bittler had been thrown from her
car and died from head, chest and neck
trauma.
A Bedford County sheriff's deputy
had actually responded to the scene on
Monday, October 1st, but did not see
the car.

still alive after a plane crash in
Carroll County.

Airport metal detectors could someday
be replaced by body-scanning machines
the federal government will begin
testing today in Phoenix.

The machine creates a 3- D image of a
passenger's body..then sends it to a
viewing station, where a T-S-A agent
looks for potential threats.
It's an option for travelers selected
