Nearly a month after thousands
converged on a small Louisiana town to
demand
justice, Congress is getting involved.
Today - legal and civil rights experts
will testify before the House Judiciary
Committee about the Jena 6 and youth
hate crime.
(SOT REV. AL SHARPTON 154600): "TWO
WRONGS DON'T MAKE ONE CIVIL RIGHT - WE
MUST HAVE ONE STANDARD OF JUSTICE."
The Jena 6 are six black teenagers who
were charged with attempted murder
after beating a white classmate. The
arrests followed a series of racial
incidents at their high school,
including the hanging of nooses from a
tree.
The teenager at the center of the case
- Mychal Bell - was convicted of
battery and jailed. Local authorities
insisted the proceedings were
color-blind--
(SOT J. REED WALTER/LaSALLE PARISH
DISTRICT ATTORNEY): "THIS CASE IS NOT -
AND
NEVER HAS BEEN - ABOUT RACE."
(nats - Free Mychal Bell!)
--But local outrage sparked a
nationwide campaign and demonstrators
took to
the streets.
His conviction was overturned and he
was freed.....only to be returned to
jail
last week after a judge ruled he had
violated his probation for an earlier,
un-related crime.
Since the case attracted national
attention, there have been a number of
other
nooses found in high-profile incidents
-- including one left on the office
door of a black professor at Columbia
University in New York.
Congress is considering expanding hate
crime laws to deal more forcefully with
what some say is a sharp rise in
racism.
(oncam)
In their testimony today, civil rights
activists are expected to call on the
federal government to intervene in
these matters as was done during the
1950s
and 1960s.

Arin Sime, the Libertarian
candidate for State Senate in the 24th
district has no objection to a bill
that does away with personal property
taxes for disabled veterans.
He says he would focus on
property tax reform across the board
for everyone in the Commonwealth...
Quote... "I will introduce a bill
to change Virginia to use an
acquisition value based property tax
system. This means your property taxes
would be based on the amount you bought
your home for, not the current market
value. The assessment of your property
for tax purposes would be capped at a
small rate of increase allowed each
year, meaning you would likely see a
maximum increase of 4 or 5% instead of
the 30% or more many people are facing.
Opposing candidates in the 16th House
District also weighed in...
Andy Parker said... "I would support
including disabled veterans in the
Governor's proposed Homestead Tax
exemption for seniors and provides a
20% relief on property tax."
While Don Merricks offered this
response...
"Since personal property taxes are
levied by the localities and not the
state, I recommend you work with your
local Board of Supervisors or City
Council to perhaps have disabled
veterans exempt from personal property
taxes in the locality where you live.
It is a tax exemption that all
localities in Virginia should consider.
