He said janitors, teachers and

Antibacterial wipes and sprays
are being used daily to clean all

Parents should be checking their
medicine cabinets.....as the Food and
Drug

Administration today begins hearings
that MAY result in the banning of

non-prescription cough and cold
medications for children under 6.

Many pediatricians have said for YEARS
the products are over-hyped--

(SOT DR. CHRISTOPHER

TOLCHER/PEDIATRICIAN 210103): "WE'VE
KNOWN FOR A LONG

TIME THAT COUGH AND COLD MEDICINES IN
YOUNG CHILDREN REALLY AREN'T VERY

EFFECTIVE."

But what's motivating the F-D-A isn't
how well these products work, it's the

fear they're not being used correctly.

(SOT DR. CHRISTOPHER

TOLCHER/PEDIATRICIAN 210310): "THE
POISON CONTROL CENTERS

GET HUNDREDS OF CALLS A YEAR FROM
PARENTS OF CHILDREN THAT HAVE BEEN
MIS-DOSED

OR OVER-DOSED."

The consequences can be deadly.
Overdoses from cough syrups have been
linked

to 123 deaths over 35 years.

(nats)

Today's hearings follow a voluntary
recall last week of these medications
for

infants and toddlers after the F-D-A
found they provided hardly any benefit.

In a statement, drug manufacturers
insisted the products are safe and

effective if used correctly and
essentially blamed parents, citing

QUOTE--"rare patterns of mis-use
leading to overdose."

For many parents, it's not worth taking
the chance.

(SOT LUANA GIFFEN/MOTHER 205540): "WE

KINDA PULLED BACK A LITTLE BIT, AND YOU

KNOW SOMETIMES WE JUST LET THE COUGH
RUN ITS COURSE - UNTIL IT STOPS."

And that's a remedy doctors CAN
recommend.

(SOT CHRISTOPHER TOLCHER/PEDIATRICIAN

210630): "BASICALLY WE HAVEN'T IMPROVED

MUCH BEYOND GRANDMA'S CHICKEN SOUP."

(oncam)

WHILE THE F-D-A WON'T VOTE ON THE
MEDICIATIONS UNTIL TOMORROW AT THE
EARLIEST,

A CONGRSSIONAL WATCHDOG COMMITEE HAS
ALREADY ASKED MANUFATURERS TO

Parents should be checking their
medicine cabinets.....as the Food and
Drug

Administration today begins hearings
that MAY result in the banning of

non-prescription cough and cold
medications for children under 6.

Many pediatricians have said for YEARS
the products are over-hyped--

(SOT DR. CHRISTOPHER

TOLCHER/PEDIATRICIAN 210103): "WE'VE
KNOWN FOR A LONG

TIME THAT COUGH AND COLD MEDICINES IN
YOUNG CHILDREN REALLY AREN'T VERY

EFFECTIVE."

But what's motivating the F-D-A isn't
how well these products work, it's the

fear they're not being used correctly.

(SOT DR. CHRISTOPHER

TOLCHER/PEDIATRICIAN 210310): "THE
POISON CONTROL CENTERS

GET HUNDREDS OF CALLS A YEAR FROM
PARENTS OF CHILDREN THAT HAVE BEEN
MIS-DOSED

OR OVER-DOSED."

The consequences can be deadly.
Overdoses from cough syrups have been
linked

to 123 deaths over 35 years.

(nats)

Today's hearings follow a voluntary
recall last week of these medications
for

infants and toddlers after the F-D-A
found they provided hardly any benefit.

In a statement, drug manufacturers
insisted the products are safe and

effective if used correctly and
essentially blamed parents, citing

QUOTE--"rare patterns of mis-use

leading to overdose."

For many parents, it's not worth taking
the chance.

(SOT LUANA GIFFEN/MOTHER 205540): "WE

KINDA PULLED BACK A LITTLE BIT, AND YOU

KNOW SOMETIMES WE JUST LET THE COUGH
RUN ITS COURSE - UNTIL IT STOPS."

And that's a remedy doctors CAN
recommend.

(SOT CHRISTOPHER TOLCHER/PEDIATRICIAN

210630): "BASICALLY WE HAVEN'T IMPROVED

MUCH BEYOND GRANDMA'S CHICKEN SOUP."

(oncam)

WHILE THE F-D-A WON'T VOTE ON THE
MEDICIATIONS UNTIL TOMORROW AT THE
EARLIEST,

A CONGRSSIONAL WATCHDOG COMMITEE HAS
ALREADY ASKED MANUFATURERS TO
VOLUNTARILY

RE-LABEL THEIR PRODUCTS.

The university announced
yesterday it has narrowed down the
field to 3 proposals for the classrooms

where 32 people were murdered on April
16th.

The first plan would allow the
Engineering Department to continue
using the space for laboratories.

The two other proposals would
turn the classrooms into community
spaces.

There's even an idea to make the
rooms a Center for Violence Prevention
and Peace Studies.

The Norris Hall task force has
until December first to recommend a
plan for the classrooms to University
President Charles Steger.
