where wildfires are raging on.

One person has died, and more than a
dozen others have been injured.

From the air - it looks like a lava
field.

On the ground....

(SOT MOS): "IT'S LIKE AN APOCALYPSE -

REALLY QUITE SHOCKING."

There are at least 10 blazes stretching
from north of Los Angeles to San

Diego. With powerful Santa Ana winds
fueling its appetite, the flames are

feasting on land dried out by high
temperatures and low humidity.

(NAT CHOPPER PILOT): "THERE'S NO
FIREFIGHTERS - THIS ONE'S GONNA TAKE
OFF."

With almost 40-thousand acres already
destroyed, fire crews are working
around

the clock to contain the flames.

BIGGEST PROBLEM IS IT'S A WIND-DRIVEN

The winds are so bad, authorities were
forced to ground the tankers and

helicopters that had been battling the
blaze from above....leaving the fight

to crews on the ground....where
shifting winds create new firelines
faster

than old ones can be doused.

Officials say thousands of homes are at
risk, and they're doing all they

can...but need help.

. Tazewell County Deputy... Eric
Mullins... was shot Friday when he
stopped a car with three robbery
suspects.

of uranium ore wants Virginia to end
its 25-year ban on uranium mining.

dollars, with uranium selling at $80
dollars a pound.

Some landowners have invested in the
newly-formed Virginia Uranium

administration is assessing the
situation.

Thom Burnett is used to trauma
situations as an emergency room doctor.

But he also wears another hat as
an army reserve.

And his latest deployment took
him all the way to Afghanistan where he
dealt with a different type of
trauma.....blast injuries and gun shot
wounds.

He also treated a different type
of patient....Taliban and Al Qaeda

operatives.

attention.

He had the chance to meet them on
humanitarian missions while delivering
care packages to young children.

He saw their appreciation for the
American military and hopes his stay
left a lasting impression.

sunny side, however, high clouds will

stream in from the west throughout the
afternoon. Highs are forecast in the
mid to upper 70s. Our next storm system
is taking shape across the southern
Plains. This will bring us an extended
period of shower chances for the
upcoming week. Most of us will stay dry
through Monday, but by Monday night and
Tuesday low pressure will be cut off
from the main steering currents around
the lower Mississippi River Valley.
This low, with a front in our
neighborhood, will bring clouds and
occasional showers Tuesday through
Thursday morning. Temperatures will
range from the 60s to 70s during this
time. We should dry out throughout the
day on Friday. Next weekend is looking
partly sunny with highs in the low to
mid 60s.

MONDAY: Increasing clouds. High: 75

VO-NAT Spears' attorney says the singer has

regained temporary visitation rights of
her two sons.

That, as the pop star and tabloid
fixture continues battling ex-husband
Kevin Federline for custody of the
boys.

The attorney says a court-appointed
monitor will be with Spears during her
visits, which are allowed several days
a week.

That schedule is expected to remain in
place until a custody hearing set for
Friday.

From the air - it looks like a lava
field.

On the ground....

(SOT MOS): "IT'S LIKE AN APOCALYPSE -

REALLY QUITE SHOCKING."

There are at least 10 blazes stretching
from north of Los Angeles to San

Diego. With powerful Santa Ana winds
fueling its appetite, the flames are

feasting on land dried out by high
temperatures and low humidity.

(NAT CHOPPER PILOT): "THERE'S NO
FIREFIGHTERS - THIS ONE'S GONNA TAKE
OFF."

With almost 40-thousand acres already
destroyed, fire crews are working
around

the clock to contain the flames.
