faster than crews can put them out.
Those infamous Santa Ana winds are
supposed to pick up speed as the day
progresses-- with gusts up to 100 miles
per hour.
As of now, the number of people
chased from their homes by the
wildfires has reached at least 300-
thousand.
What were picturesque neighborhoods
now look more like war zones.

With more than a dozen wildfires raging
out of controlthousands of Southern
California residents face another day
of uncertainty.

In just 2 days, wildfires from Malibu
to San Diego have scorched more than
700
homes. More than a quarter of a
million people have been evacuated and
that
number continues to rise. Firefighters
had hoped that powerful winds that are
fanning the flames would subsidebut
forecasters now say the Santa Ana gusts
could be even more explosive today.

San Diego County is getting hit hard.
This community, Rancho Bernardo, is a
smokey ghost town. The blazing fire
spared some homes ... but not many on

city of San Diego, the focus has been
on saving lives and evacuations.

Yesterday after downpours caused flooding
yesterday in New Orleans.
Some areas had waist- high water
that soaked businesses, some of which
had just reopened after being damaged
during Hurricane Katrina.
On the upside, the rain did provide
some much-needed relief for parts of
Louisiana that have been unusually dry

ago.
Seven astronauts are set to spend
two weeks doing a major construction
job aboard the international space
station.

The clouds lifted and the rain held off
just long enough for the Space Shuttle
Discovery and it's seven astronauts to
lift off.
This launch comes despite
recommendations from some engineers
calling for a
delay to replace heat shields on the
orbiter s wings.
They were concerned about them holding
up as it returned to earth.
In 2003 a tile broke off the Shuttle
Columbia as it took off and hit its
wing.
The damage caused the shuttle to break
up as it re-entered the earth s
atmosphere. All seven astronauts on
board were killed.
But the shuttle launch manager says he
s confident this flight will be safe.

ONCE UP IN ORBITTHE SHUTTLE S SEVEN
ASTRONATUS WILL JOIN UP WITH THE
INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.
With five spacewalks planned, they ll
continue building the station.
As part of the mission they will
deliver a bus-sized compartment called
Harmony.
It s a unit, that will serve as a
docking port for European and Japanese
laboratories that will arrive over the
next few months.
Also history is being made with this
mission. For the first timea woman is
in
command of the international space
station and another woman is in charge
of
the Shuttle.

astronauts will call the shuttle and

City Councils for both cities are

students are in temporary housing
after a routine inspection found cracks
in their dorm.
Liberty Chancellor Jerry Falwell
Junior says an inspection found cracks
in Dorm Seven had widened a little
since last December, and an engineer
recommended students be moved out until
repairs could be made.
The building was one of the first
dormitories built at Liberty in the
1970's.
Repairs are expected to take seven
to 10 days once a contractor is hired.
Falwell says that will happen
quickly.

grow and sell his own biodiesel.

Forecast Center. Mostly cloudy today
with scattered showers. The winds will
also increase as we head through the
day. The best chance of rain will be
in the western mountains. The next
weather system will be coming from the
Plains states. An area of low pressure
will be guided by a cold front just to
the west. The two will remain close
enough that we'll have cloudy skies and
periods of rain in the forecast over
the next few days. The front is
scheduled to pass south of Virginia on
Wednesday, this would mean clouds and
showers through the end of the week.
Temperatures will also respond to the
clouds and showers, with highs in the
70s, then fall into the 60s for the
remainder of the week. Models are still
inconsistent about the weekend, but it
appears another front will approach the
region bringing showers on Saturday and

GRAPHIC=None Even a small-scale meth lab requires a
large-scale cleanup. That's what
happened yesterday in Rocky Mount.
A traffic stop eventually led sheriff's
deputies to 71 Cassell Road.
Investigators say chemicals and
equipment to make meth were in the
basement. Even though it did not appear
to be a large lab, the chemicals are
toxic, so special crews wearing those
"moonsuits" had to be brought in.
Ricky Dillon of Rocky Mount faces two
drug charges.

Health" on an expedition to Baja's Sea
of Cortez in search of an endangered
shark..
