With unrelenting winds whipping
wildfires into a frenzy, more than half
a
million people have fled in the largest
evacuation in state history.
650 square miles have been
blackened....Along with thirteen
hundred homes.
Tens of thousands MORE are threatened.
While authorities have gotten ahold of
the blaze in Malibu---
(SOT SHERIFF LEE BACA, LOS ANGELES
COUNTY 220422): "YESTERDAY, MOTHER
NATURE
WAS IN CHARGE. TODAY THE L-A COUNTY
FIRE DEPARTMENT AND OTHER AGENCIES ARE
IN
CHARGE."
Elsewhere - and ESPECIALLY around San
Diego............(NAT - GET
OUT!)..............exhausted fire crews
are conceding ground to the monster
flames.
Unless the winds die down, they will
give up land to try and protect
people's
homes.
Teri Okita/Stand-Up
RIDGE AFTER RIDGE, THE FIRES ARE
RELENTLESS - CHEWING UP HILLSIDES FAST
AND
FURIOUSLY.
(SOT GREG CIUFFO/RESIDENT): "WE GOT OUT
OF HERE WITH THE CLOTHES ON OUR BACKS.
WE HAVE NOTHING."
Some residents are being allowed back
into evacuated areas.
(NAT) "IT'S GONE, IT'S GONE, IT'S
GONE."
Jim Burcar couldn't wait to check on
his house......but it's not there
anymore.
(SOT JIM BURCAR/RESIDENT 004637 FONT
EARLY): "HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR
HOUSE BURNING DOWN. I DON'T KNOW WHAT
TO SAY."
Even in areas where fires have been put
out, the devastation is so
wide-spread, it looks like a war zone.
Nothing but rubble, and a heavy layer
of smoke that doesn't look like it's
going anywhere anytime soon.
There's hope the shrieking winds will
die down today, but even if they do,
there are still massive walls of flame
to contend with.

Even in areas where fires have been put
out, the devastation is so
wide-spread, it looks like a war zone.
Nothing but rubble, and a heavy layer
of smoke that doesn't look like it's
going anywhere anytime soon.
There's hope the shrieking winds will
die down today, but even if they do,
there are still massive walls of flame
to contend with.

VO-NAT So how do you prevent forest Fires?
For starters.. obey the
statewide burn ban...
If you use a woodstove, make
sure the ashes cool for at least a day
or two before throwing them out-
and never throw burning
cigarette butts out of the car window.
*CG locator Roanoke Co.
If you live near the woods.. you
should protect your home.. to do that..
get rid of all things that could fuel a
fire within 30 feet of your home--
that means moving fire wood away
from the house,
raking those leaves off the yard
and walkways,
cleaning gutters, and cutting
branches that may lean on your house.

The legislation will help to

Six existing wilderness areas
will also be expanded within the

The legislation must now pass in
the Senate, where an identical bill

Congressman Rick Boucher says the
legislation not only will protect the

LEO TOSS STRAIGHT TO COMMERCIAL scattered showers and even a few

COMM Temperatures today will climb into the

Thursday. This would keep highs only in
the 50s and low 60s, with spotty
showers and drizzle. As far as rainfall
amounts through Friday, an inch or more
is certainly possible as the front
