GRAPHIC=Wildfires President Bush will arrive in
California today to see for himself all
the damage the wildfires have caused.
The fires have destroyed about 15-

the largest evacuation in California
history.
But as Teri Okita tells us,
firefighters are finally getting some
help from their old enemy...the winds.

The fires are burning just as hot, but
the winds aren't blowing as hard and
that left the door open for
counter-attack.
(nats)
Helicopters and air tankers took to the
skies, slicing though smoke, in an
aerial assult that had been largely
grounded by days of gale-force winds.
On
the ground.....firefighters pressed the
attack - trying to prevent burning
hillsides from torching neighborhoods.
Mother Nature might be cutting fire
crews a break but she wasn't backing
down.
None of the six major fires in San
Diego County is more than 15-percent
contained and still has 85-hundred
homes in its sights.
And a huge burn in Orange County may be
arson. FBI investigators have
pinpointed two areas where they THINK
that fire was intentionally set.
Teri Okita/Stand-Up/Rancho Bernardo
Many residents are still waiting for
the green light to return to their
neighborhood and see what they have
left........all hoping they don't come
home.....to something like this.
(track)
Some have lost everything--
(SOT PATTY THOMPSON/RESIDENT): "BABY
CLOTHES, PICTURES ALL THROUGH THE
YEARS,
OUR WEDDING ALBUM, EVERYTHING."
--Others think they're OK--
(SOT WIM SINGER/RESIDENT 182415): "I'M
AMAZED OUR HOUSE IS STILL STANDING
BECAUSE WHEN I LEFT, THE EMBERS WERE
FLYING."
--And many just don't know.
(FONT LATE SOT JOHN JOSEPH/RESIDENT
014110): "YOU THINK YOU'RE ABOUT TO
LOSE
EVERYTHING YOU HAVE, YOU FREAK. YOU
DON'T EAT - YOU FAST, AND YOU PRAY."
While locals find out who's lucky and
who's not, the federal government is
stepping in. President Bush has signed
a major disaster declaration for the
state, and he'll see the damage for
himself when he tours the area later
today.
