GRAPHIC=FFE Good evening everybody and

welcome to week ten of Friday Football
Extra.

What a mess this season has been
with this being our 5th wet night out
10 Fridays this season.

A large majority of the games
tonight were understandably postponed -
but we do appreciate the hearty folks
and the athletic directors who decided
to play tonight and give us enough
games to crank a show for you.

In the next 30 minutes we'll show
you how Salem had to come from 13 down
in the fourth quarter.

We'll get on the field turf

carpet in Salem, Roanoke County and
Lynchburg - plus check in with perhaps
the best private school football
product in decades - former St. Anne's
star and UVA defensive end Chris Long.
GRAPHIC=AMHERST/S.RIVER

But first let's get down to the
highlights and we begin with Friday
Football Extra's number one team - the
Amherst County Lancers.

Next week - the Lancers will
tangle with fellow Seminole unbeaten
Heritage - but tonight they were in the
their element in the elements agsinst
winless Staunton River.

Amherst Co. vs. Staunton River An absolute driving rain in :00 Moneta tonight - one of those rains
where even the umbrella couldn't keep
you dry.

The Golden Eagles can't handle
the snap out of punt formation - and
number 14 Laurice Garland flies and
makes sure Amherst gets the ball and
great field position.

And Josh Braxton would make sure

they scored as he scoots in off the
right side to make it a 14-to-nothing.

All of the Lancers were
contributing - watch the hit the Kicker
David Kreuziger puts on the Staunton
River kick returner on the ensuing
kickoff.

Amherst would go up 21-to-nothing
and then add to 7 more as Peter Rose
carries the mail right at you and right
down the sideline. It's 28-to-nothing
Lancers early in the second quarter of
play.

Now late in the second quarter -
Rose would show is skills as he keep
grinding out the yards and pick ing up
15 and a first down on this play. *CG ffefinal Amherst Co.

55 He would call his own number Staunton River later in the drive for the TD. There's 14 plenty to applaud as Amherst beats
Staunton River 55 to 14 and improves to
9 and 0 on the season.

GRAPHIC=RURAL RETREAT/CHILHOWIE The rain line was very definite -

And there was no question that

the skies were dry and the field was in
good shape when the Warriors and
Indians kicked things off 30 minutes
this side of Bristol.

Rural Retreat vs. Chilhowie The moon was very full and very :00 bright in the Chilhowie sky.

The Chilhowie Rec League
cheerleaders were with the big girls
last night hamming it up for the
cameraman.

In the second quarter with the
score tied at 7-all, Rural Retreat's
David Harrison will take a handoff to
his left and break off a big run as he
rumbles all the way to the 44 yard line
on the 20 yard carry.

Harrison would keep cranking,
only this time no one will stop him as
he cuts to his left and goes the

distance on the on the 34 yard TD run.
Rural Retreat jumps back on top 13-to-7
after the missed kick.

Chilhowie who keep the back and
forth action going as Josh Jackson
fakes the handoff and goes to his left
and eventually pitches the ball to
Robert Gonzalez. He will make a few
cuts, break a few tackles and roll 44
yards for the equalizer. The dash for
cash - along with the extra point puts
the Warriors on top 14-to-13.

Rural Retreat and Harrison would
have none of that as he just refuses to
go down without a fight on this play -
showing amazing effort as he drags
tacklers for 16 yards on the power
carry.

Harrison would win the battle of
wills by capping off the drive with the
two yard touchdown. The Indians take a
19-to-14 lead. *CG ffefinal Rural Retreat

29 Rural Retreat would then go for Chilhowie two, and the conversion is on the money 34 as the Indians push their lead to
21-to-14.

But Chilhowie rallies for the 34
to 29 win.

Richlands vs. Carroll Co. The Cavaliers and head coach Tom

and then made quite a statement for 30
minutes.

Senior quarterback Travis Green
hooks up with Zane Mitchell on the nice
pass on the left side of the field as
the Cavaliers pick up a huge chunk of
yardage into Blue Tornadoes territory.

Later in the first half, senior
Cody Ayers will line up and drill the
short field goal as the Cavaliers give
the home folks something to cheer about
with a 3-to-nothing lead.

The Cavaliers would keep working

the passing game in the opening half as
Green drops back and hits the hole in
the zone perfectly as he drops one in
to his fullback Josh Early, who hangs
on for the big play.

That set up the lethal leg of
Ayers - who easily strokes the 42 yard
field goal to put the Cavs on top
6-to-nothing in the second quarter.

It looked like it would be all
Cavaliers tonight as - the Carroll
defense steps up. Green breaks up the
Richlands pass and James Lanning picks
it off getting the turnover. *CG ffefinal Richlands

34 But the real turnover came in the Chilhowie second half as Richlands reeled off 34 6 unanswered points to post a 34-to-6 win

The Knights' Danial Downing would

THURMAN:

NICK:

The younger Miller is just beginning
his career at Gretna, but he is already
invoking memories of another diminutive
Hawks quarterback, Vic Hall, who broke
several state records, including
racking up nearly 14 thousand yards of
total offense before heading to UVA.

CHRIS:

TRAVIS WELLS: Hall led Gretna on a 28
game winning streak and back to back
state titles. Miller has a pretty good
start on that. The Hawks are 8 and oh
and ranked at the top of the state
single A polls. Travis Wells, Friday
Football Extra.
