ruins..and the families of seven
college students are in mourning.

of Myrtle Beach.
Some witnesses saw the house go up in

Dolly Parton's career-- died yesterday
of lung cancer.
The Grand Ole Opry star celebrated 50
years in the prestigious musical hall
of fame last May..
Among his many hits-- "Carroll County
Accident," "Company's Comin'," and
"Green Green Grass of Home."
Wagoner had survived an abdominal
aneurysm last year-- and was just
hospitalized again this month with lung
cancer.
Porter Wagoner was 80.

Southern California's not out of the
woods just yet as 7 wildfires continue
to
burn.
The blistering winds that whipped fires
over more than half-a-million acres
last week cooled over the weekend and
fire crews took advantage, chasing
flames from canyons back up the hills.

Department): "We're making good
head-way and getting a good containment
line put around."

Tankers and helicopters buzzed the sky
in the round-the-clock air assault that
helped turn the tide. The wind is
expected to heat up today, and
officials
want to re-claim as much ground as
possible.

Here in San Diego, almost all displaced
residents have returned home, and the
community is trying to re-gain some
sense of normalcy.

It was business as usual at Qualcomm
Stadium. The stadium housed
10-thousand
evacuees last week but it wasn't
natural disaster that filled the stands
sunday....it was football.

"WE HAVE WITHOUT ANY DOUBT THE
GREATEST,
THE BRAVEST THE BEST FIREFIGHTERS IN
THE WORLD."
There was less optimism further north,
where many evacuees complained of their
treatment.

INSULT TO INJURY HERE AND WE NEED TO BE
TREATED LIKE HUMAN BEINGS."
More than 12-thousand homes are still
in danger but officials are cautiously
optimistic. What had been a ring of
fire that threatened to consume entire
neighborhoods has been reduced to
pockets of danger in the hillsides.
But
authorities know that can easily
change....depending on which way the
wind
blows.

lost his life serving our country in
Iraq.
The Department of Defense
announced Specialist David E. Lambert
died Friday - shortly after an
improvised explosive device went off.
The 39-year-old was from Cedar
Bluff.
As part of the National Guard
Lambert belonged to the 91st Troop
Command which is located in West Point,
Virginia.

But for one church that date also
hit close to home.

Trinity United Methodist Church.
Heavy winds tore off the roof and
ultimately led to a fire.
The church is located in
Southwest Roanoke and has been around
for more than 100 years.
Since the spring, the building
has undergone renovations and today the
congregation celebrated its reopening.
Members are thankful to be back
home.

Valley's SPCA's annual walk for the
animals in Elmwood Park yesterday.
The event is one of the
organizations major fundraisers.

a day to provide care for all of the

Seven people, believed to be
students, were killed in a fire at a
beach house.

Beach-- which is about 30 miles north
of Myrtle Beach.
Some witnesses saw the house go up in
flames.

The man who launched Dolly Parton's

prestigious musical hall of fame last
May..

Wagoner had survived an abdominal
aneurysm last year-- and was just
hospitalized again this month with lung
cancer.

as the day tragedy struck Virginia
Tech.
But for one church that date also
hit close to home.

Trinity United Methodist Church.
Heavy winds tore off the roof and
ultimately led to a fire.
The church is located in
Southwest Roanoke and has been around
for more than 100 years.
Since the spring, the building
has undergone renovations and today the

Members are thankful to be back
home.

The event is one of the
organizations major fundraisers.

of lung cancer.
The Grand Ole Opry star celebrated 50

"Green Green Grass of Home."
Wagoner had survived an abdominal
aneurysm last year-- and was just
hospitalized again this month with lung
cancer.

burn.
The blistering winds that whipped fires
over more than half-a-million acres
last week cooled over the weekend and
fire crews took advantage, chasing
flames from canyons back up the hills.

head-way and getting a good containment
line put around."

Tankers and helicopters buzzed the sky
in the round-the-clock air assault that
helped turn the tide. The wind is
expected to heat up today, and
officials
want to re-claim as much ground as

Here in San Diego, almost all displaced
residents have returned home, and the
community is trying to re-gain some
sense of normalcy.

It was business as usual at Qualcomm
Stadium. The stadium housed
10-thousand
evacuees last week but it wasn't
natural disaster that filled the stands
sunday....it was football.

There was less optimism further north,
where many evacuees complained of their

More than 12-thousand homes are still
in danger but officials are cautiously

pockets of danger in the hillsides.

Sailors will be living in South Central
Virginia for the next two weeks.
The group will be training in
various places like South Boston, Ft.
Pickett and the Henry County area
before heading off next spring to join

lost his life serving our country in
Iraq.
The Department of Defense
announced Specialist David E. Lambert
died Friday - shortly after an
improvised explosive device went off.
The 39-year-old was from Cedar
Bluff.
As part of the National Guard
Lambert belonged to the 91st Troop
Command which is located in West Point,
Virginia.
