Several people have turned up with

Now school and health officials are

do not plan to close the school down.

But William Byrd is undergoing
environmental testing. They're checking
the air and the water to identify a
potential cause of these symptoms and
if this might be related to the school
environment.

They say there is no evidence at this
point that is something contagious or

GRAPHIC=NONE Uncertainty in the economy is taking

its toll on the stock market. As CBS'

Alexis Christoforous reports... even a
big dose of good news wasn't enough to

pull the market out of its latest
slump.

ANOTHER ROCKY RIDE ON WALL STREET...

(NAT BELL)

A STRONG JOBS REPORT WOULD TYPICALLY
BRING OUT THE BULLS BUT EVEN THAT
WASN'T

ENOUGH TO EASE THIS JITTERY MARKET. THE
U-S ADDED TWICE AS MANY JOBS AS

EXPECTED IN OCTOBER - SIGNALING THE

ECONOMY COULD AVOID A RECESSION. BUT

INVESTORS REMAIN JITTERY.

(SOT-David Wyss, Chief Economist,

Standard and Poors:) "The markets are
still

concerned with what's been happening in
the financial sector. (12:37:33)

WHAT'S HAPPENING IS MORE BAD NEWS: THIS
WEEK ALONE CITIGROUP AND MERRILL LYNCH

SAID LOSSES FROM THE MORTGAGE MARKET
COLLAPSE WILL ONLY GET WORSE.

(SOT-Stephen Porpora, NYSE Floor

Trader) "Good markets climb walls of
worry...

the last two days the wall has been
winning." (13:46:34)

ADDING TO THE WORRIES -- SIGNS THAT
CONSUMERS ARE FEELING THE PINCH... AND

STARTING TO CUT BACK ON SPENDING...

(SOT-Wyss:) "The consumer, eventually,

is going to have to slow down as a

result of the higher oil prices,
falling home prices." (12:39:42)

WITH OIL PRICES CLOSING IN ON 100
DOLLARS A BARREL AND GOLD AT A 27 YEAR

HIGH.. THERE IS NEW CONCERN ABOUT
INFLATION... AND INVESTORS ARE BETTING
THE

FED'S INTEREST RATE CUT THIS WEEK..
COULD BE THE LAST FOR SOME TIME.

(SOT-Porpora:) "They said that we're in

balance between inflation and growth.

that's where they want to be. That's
the sweet spot. They say we're there. I

would expect them to stay there.
(13:49:07)

BUT OTHERS ARE WORRIED.. THE FED COULD
REVERSE COURSE AND RAISE INTEREST RATES

-- TO KEEP INFLATION CONTAINED.

WITH SO MUCH UNCERTAINTY, INVESTORS ARE
LIKELY TO PLAY IT SAFE AT LEAST IN THE

SHORT TERM.
