Police are still investigating,
but say Officer E-M Thiel was not hit
and not injured.

According to police - Officer
Thiel pulled over a car in the
800-block of 30th street after it blew
through a stop sign.

When the car stopped- both the

passenger and driver got out and ran.

Thiel was able to catch up to
driver -and as he started to arrest
Amario Terrell Perdue - the passenger
reportedly started shooting.

A spokeswoman says *luckily* the
officer wasn't hurt, but the shooter
hit several homes in the area.

:00 Someone left their mark on dozens
of mailboxes, signs and even cars in
the town of Narrows and in the county.

In most cases - mailboxes were
sprayed with black paint, but vandals
also wrote profanities on the side of a

building.

Police say it was done somewhere
between late last night and early this
morning.

Damages are estimated to be
thousands of dollars.

police want to hear from you.

down again today.

Administrators say 266 students decide
not to come to school. That's much
higer than normal. On an average day

between 60 to 80 students are out.

Some parents we spoke to say they
are still concerned about the safety of
their children.

yesterday to make up the majority in
the State Senate so that means
Virginia's legislature is now split.

Republicans held on to 19.

The G-O-P retained it's majority
in the House of Delegates though....
holding onto 54 seats.

However, Democrats chipped away
at GOP strength increasing their
numbers to 44.

It's good news for Governor Tim
Kaine who's heavy into writing his
first two- year state budget.

He hopes the new Democratic
Senate will help him push his plan to
make Pre- K more accessible.

However, some Republican leaders
fear the new Senate leadership will
steer Virginia too far to the left.

Michael Skakel aren't giving up their
fight to get him a new trial.

Skakel was convicted of killing
his neighbor Marth Moxley when they
were both 15 years old.

But he wasn't convicted of the
1975 crime until 2002.

His attorneys have already been
turned down in Connecticut's state
court and have now gone to federal
court.

Mormons have a lower rate of heart
disease than other Americans.

They looked at various aspects of
the Mormon

Religion, including monthly fasting,
not drinking coffee, tea or alcohol,
not smoking, attending worship
services, and a weekly day of rest.

Turns out regardless of religion,
patients who fasted had much lower rate
of the disease than non-fasters.

Carolina.

Petty Enterprises now has a
60,000-square-foot operation in the
Randolph County community of Level
Cross near the Petty's homes. The
racing operation dates back to 1949 in
one location and was founded by Lee
Petty in a machinery shed next to his
house. But the Pettys are about to be
on the move.

its NASCAR shop to Mooresville to be
closer to the center of racing
activities in the Charlotte area.

The company has agreed to
lease space in the shop formerly used
by Robert Yates Racing. The move is
expected to begin in December and be

completed by the end of the year.
