Experts say the M-R-S-A infection's
been around for awhile. The
drug-resistant strain has long plagued
the sick and elderly in hospitals and
nursing homes.

But the so-called superbug started
popping up in schools across the
country - killing students in New York
and Virginia and officials say it's now

a real public health concern.

(:20-:25 SOT DR. JULIE GERBERDING/CDC

DIRECTOR): "WE ACTUALLY LIKE THE FACT
THAT IT'S GETTING ATTENTION BECAUSE WE
CAN HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND BETTER ABOUT
WHAT THEY NEED TO DO ABOUT IT."

The Centers for Disease Control reports
M-R-S-A kills nearly 19-thousand people
a year and causes serious infections in
more than 90-thousand.

One of them was 12-year-old Omar
Rivera. In October he got a rash and
started walking with a limp. His mother
took him to the hospital where doctors
gave him Benadryl and sent him home.
Two days later, he was dead.

(:51-54 SOT AILEEN RIVERA/OMAR'S

MOTHER): "HE'S MY CHILD, 12 YEARS OLD.

I DON'T HAVE ANYONE ELSE....MY ONLY
CHILD."

Infection experts have long urged
hospitals to be more aggressive in
their treatment, but now lawmakers are
calling for action. They want to

establish a reporting system that
tracks the superbug nation-wide, a
system some argue should already be in
place.

(1:08-:114 SOT SENATOR CHARLES

SCHUMER/D-NY): "UNFORTUNATELY THE
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS WORKING TO STOP
THIS BUT WITH ONE HAND TIED BEHIND ITS
BACK."

Whatever action the goverment takes
need to be FAST. The infection can
spread quickly, and an estimated 3
million people are at risk.

(1:23-1:26 FONT EARLY half-way over vid
SOT NEIL FISHMAN, UNIVERSITY OF

PENNSYLVANIA): "IT'S A TIPPING POINT IN
THE U-S, AND I THINK WE ARE CERTAINLY
ON THE HEELS OF A NATIONAL CRISIS."

(oncam)

While a House committee hears from
experts today, legislation has already
been proposed to fund research to find
a new anti-biotic the infection is NOT
resistant to.

VIDEO FROM NASA

On the day the Space Shuttle Discovery
is set to come back to earth-NASA woke

up the seven astronauts to the music of
"Chitty Chitty Bang, Bang."

(NATSOUND MUSIC)

The song was dedicated to Shuttle
Commander Pam Melroy-who made it clear

instead of coming in over the Caribbean
and landing in the wee hours of the

morning she wanted to touchdown in

daylight--a much safer and easier
landing.

So now Discovery is descending over the
United States-it's the first time a

Shuttle has done that since Columbia
broke apart as it came down in 2003.

After pieces of the spacecraft fell on
Texas and Louisiana NASA opted for a

more southerly route that crossed
mostly water.

(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/KENNEDY SPACE
CENTER)

FOR DISCOVERY'S ASTRONAUTS THIS WAS
ALREADY A VERY DIFFICULT MISSION-THEIR

MAIN OBJECTIVE WAS DELIVERING A HUGE
ADDITION TO PROVIDE MORE LIVING SPACE
UP

THERE.AND THEY DID THAT BUT IT TURNED
OUT-THAT WASN'T THEIR MOST DAUNTING

TASK."

In fact their expansion plans were
almost derailed when one of the space

station's solar power panels tore in
two places as it was being unfurled.

To fix it--Astronaut Scott Parazynski
had to make one of the most dangerous

spacewalks in history.

Not only was he a half a football
field's length away from the safety of
space

station-but he was working very close
to more than 100 volts of electricity.

But with shock resistant clothing and
using his emergency room skillsDr.

Parazynski sutured the ripped panel and
it was finally extended and ready to

soak in the sun's energy and turn it
into electricity.

So now Discovery's astronauts are
almost home-and for NASA it will be a
quick

welcome back and then it's attention
will turn toward the next

mission---Atlantis is set to go up in a

month.
