OQ=News7, Lynchburg. << When they started up the Red Apple
(END SOT) Thrift Shop eight years ago, organizers

weren't sure what to expect.

The idea was to take in donations
of used and new items to resell ...
with the proceeds benefitting Lynchburg

city schools.

Almost from the start it was a
success, and the Red Apple has
contributed more than 150-thousand
dollars to help schools buy things like
new playground equipment or teacher
supplies.

But next week, the store will
close its doors.

SOT SOT FULL 2:54:05

IN Q=It's very tough BEV CAMPBELL/RED APPLE BOARD CHAIRMAN:

IT'S VERY TOUGH. WE WANT TO FULFILL
THAT MISSION. WE'VE SEEN WHAT THE
MONEYS CAN DO FOR THE STUDENTS AND THE
SCHOOLS AND WE WANT TO CONTRIBUTE AS
MUCH AS WE CAN, WE ARE COMMITTED TO OUR
MISSION.

RUN16 (END SOT)

OUT Q=to our mission. A number of factors are to blame,

including fewer volunteers and rising
expenses, such as rent.

So they're trying to sell off as
much merchandise as they can while they
look for a new, cheaper location.

SOT SOT FULL 2:59:27

IN Q=I'm very hopeful BECKY PORTER/RED APPLE FOUNDER: I'M

VERY HOPEFUL, I JUST THINK IT WOULD BE
VERY HARD TO RECREATE IT, IF IT HAS TO
CLOSE, AND HOPEFULLY WE'LL BE ABLE TO

FIND ANOTHER SPOT AND CONTINUE.

RUN11 (END SOT)

OUT Q=and continue. Porter and the others hope the

shutdown will serve as a wakeup call
and inspire parents, teachers the
community to get reinvested in the Red
Apple and its cause.

SOT SOT FULL 3:01:32

IN Q=I think many JOAN FOSTER/LYNCHBURG MAYOR: I THINK

MANY IN THE COMMUNITY, I'VE HEARD, LOVE
THE CONCEPT, AND I THINK THEY JUST NEED
TO GET MORE NEWS OUT THERE THAT MAYBE
THEY NOW NEED OUR COMMUNITY TO HELP
THEM A LITTLE BIT.

RUN11 (END SOT)

OUT Q=a little bit.

IN Q=We definitely CAMPBELL: WE DEFINITELY WANT TO COME

BACK, BIGGER, BETTER AND STRONGER ...
WE JUST NEED TO FIND A WAY TO DO THAT.
