GRAPHIC=None Air travel may be a little easier for
Thanksgiving.
President Bush is ordering steps to
reduce air traffic congestion, and
those long delays that leave passengers
stranded.
As Karen Brown tells us, the

an express lane in the sky.

It's a fast fix for the holidays.
28:50 (SOT-President Bush)
"I WANT TO ANNOUNCE A SERIES OF
PRELIMINARY ACTIONS TO ADDRESS THE
EPIDEMIC OF
AVIATION DELAYS." :07
The President's plan to keep planes
moving starts in the Northeast where
flight delays can have a ripple effect
around the nation.
For five days next week commercial
planes will be able to use military
airspace.
The pentagon is basically opening up an
express lane from Florida to Maine.
And at New York's Kennedy airport
simultaneous departures will be
allowed.
28:33(SOT-President Bush)
"WE CAN DO BETTER, WE CAN HAVE AN
AVIATION SYSTEM THAT'S IMPROVED." :06
(BRIDGE: Karen Brown/CBS NEWS/New York,
NY)
THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN COMES AT A NEEDED
TIME.
THE AIRLINES ARE HAVING THE WORST
ON-TIME PERFORMANCE YEAR ON RECORD.
ONE OUT OF EVERY FOUR FLIGHTS IS
LATE..... AND THAT'S WITHOUT ANY
HOLIDAY
TRAFFIC.
(NATS)
Frequent flyers John and Diane Lefferts
know about the problems all too well.
13:21(SOT-Diane Lefferts/Frequent
Flyer)
"I THINK IT'S WRONG, I THINK SOMETHING
HAS TO BE DONE TO FIX IT BECAUSE EVERY
FLIGHT HAS BEEN DELAYED THAT WE'VE BEEN
ON." :05
Among the long term solutions.... A
proposal to double the fee airlines pay
for bumping travelers off flights.
Airlines could also be fined if flights
are chronically late.
And President Bush wants congress to
pass legislation that would modernize
the
air traffic control system.
36:01 (SOT-President)
"BY WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN RESTORE THE
CONFIDENCE OF AMERICA'S CONSUMERS,
IMPROVE THE EFFICIENCY OF AMERICA'S
AIRPORTS AND BRING ORDER TO AMERICA'S
SKIES."
The president is hoping several small
steps will have a big impact through
the
holiday season.

VO-NAT
National Geographic
paleantologists have discovered a
110-million-year-old, elephant-sized
dinosaur.
The plant-eater, with a mouth
shaped like a vacuum, was found in the
Sahara Desert.
Inside its jaw, it has 50 columns
of tiny, sharp teeth.
The bones of this dinosaur were
first found in the nineties.
But it took years of research and
digging before paleontologists could
piece together the dinosaur's unique
jaw.
