Airport security is tighter than ever
but NOT tight enough.
That's the conclusion of a troubling
government report that exposes
dangerous
holes in our aviation security shield.
(SOT PAUL KURTZ/CBS NEWS SECURITY
ANALYST 174100): "WITHOUT A DOUBT,
T-S-A CAN
DO A BETTER JOB AND THEY HAVE A LONG
WAY TO GO."
The G-A-O report reveals undercover
investigators testing 19 airports got
past
security checkpoints (gfx-in)
undetected with components for several
improvised explosives....Both in their
carry-ons and hidden on their bodies.
Investigators obtained the bomb parts
at local stores and over the internet
for less than 150-dollars.(gfx-out)
(nats)
Besides human screeners, more
sophisticated equipment such as liquid
detectors
and body-scanners are being tested and
deployed across the nation that can
catch
both simple and advanced explosives.
(nats - explosions/GAO handout vid)
But as these G-A-O tests show, common
household products can be combined to
create a powerful weapon.
The fear is....a team of terrorists
could beat the system by separately
bringing components on board. Each
part may not raise alarm, but put
together, the device could blow a plane
out of the sky.
(SOT PAUL KURTZ 173715/173740): "IF YOU
BREAK UP COMPONENTS OVER SEVERAL
DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND YOU BRING THEM IN
DIFFERENT WAYS, HOW IS A T-S-A SCREENER
SUPPOSED TO PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER?
/edit-over pix/ IT'S AN EXCEPTIONALLY
DIFFICULT PROBLEM TO HANDLE."
And that's EXACTLY what investigators
did.....Proving six years after 9-11,
U-S aviation remains a vulnerable
target.
(oncam)
And later this morning, a House
committee will hear all about the
investigation's findings from G-A-O
officials.

Matt is often asked about the
smell of the waste oil.
He says as it burns it smells
better than diesel, but it carries the
odor of whatever food was cooked in it.
So if it was Chinese, then it
smells like Chinese.
And by the way, he says the
veggie oil without the trans fat is
better for the engine, as well, as the
body.
