Last year, 20 people were killed
on Virginia's roadways during the

GRAPHIC=Holiday Air Travel President Bush wants to do
something about airline delays.
At the Roanoke airport, about
90-percent of the flights arrive are on
time. The problem is often the major
hubs.

According to the latest
statistics for the first nine months of
the year, more than twenty four percent
of all domestic flights arrived late
and more than 22-percent departed
behind schedule.
That's the worst on time
performance since 1995.
President Bush announced
yesterday some new regulations to force
the airlines to do better.
For one, the airlines will now be
required to compile more accurate data
on flight delays and then provide it to
the F-A-A.
The airlines will also have to
pay you more if you are bumped from a
flight.
The fee would go from the current
200 to 600 dollars.

area lakes and reservoirs--- Virginia's
Christmas tree crop also took a hit
this year.

In Craig County, Sue Bostic of
Joe's Trees, lost nearly half of this
year's seedlings as a result of the
drought.
These are the trees that would be
harvested and sold 10 years from now.
While most of the mature trees
made it through, it could have been a
different story if it hadn't have been
for an early Christmas present from
mother nature.

unaccounted for after a rescue
operation.

Last Thursday The Humane Society says there is
a hundred dog discrepancy.
Commonwealth's Attorney Gregory
Goad said it's more like 89 dogs, and
it's now part of the investigation into
the alleged puppy mill.
Last week, hundreds of dogs and
puppies were given up by breeder Junior
Horton.
He kept 200 of them.
Goad said a miscalculation could
be the explanation - because puppies
were being born everyday at Horton's
and he continued to sell dogs.
Horton has NOT been charged with
anything.

was broken up in Grayson County.
Authorities say they took 24 dogs
from Loretta Parsons' home on Sugar
Shack Road.
Eight of them were puppies.
The Pugs and Boston terriers were
kept in wire cages.
Those involved in the rescue say
the cages were filthy.
Parsons faces 56 charges.

the legal battle over Randolph
College's plan to sell some of the art
from its Maier Museum.

Last Week The school wants to auction off
:14 four paintings later this month to
boost its endowment.
But a group of students and alumnae
sought to block that sale ... a circuit
judge granted them an injunction last
week.
They had until 4:30 yesterday
afternoon to post a 10-million dollar
bond or the injunction would "not" go
into effect.
The group had appealed that bond
to the state Supreme Court, but a clerk
says "no" action has been taken on the
case and the bond has not been posted.

Center. A cold high pressure system
will dominate the region through this
evening. This will bring colder than
average temperatures and gusty
northwest winds. The wind will slowly
diminish later today and tonight.
Mountain snow showers will also
continue to fly this morning. These
will taper off as we go into the
afternoon. The weekend gets a touch
warmer, with highs back into the 50s by
Saturday. A weak clipper will bring a
few more clouds Sunday, but little
else. FRIDAY: Becoming sunny, still
breezy. High: 47
FRIDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy and cold.
