Fog is complicating travel for many
flying to or from the West Coast.

Heavy fog shut down one of the
runways at Los Angeles International

But federal officials hope new
measures will ease the pain for some,
as they head home for Thanksgiving.

(END SOT) (Locator: New York)

Holiday travel is off to a slow start,
very slow for some.

Sot: Marty Courson/Traveler

We had a lovely stay at the waiting
room for 4 hours, 5 hours. They kept

delaying our plane, delaying our plane,
delaying our plane.

Thick fog out West is part of the
problem. It is expected to clear later

today, but on Monday poor visibility
forced the closure of two runways at
LAX.

Fog also caused delays in Atlanta and
Chicago.

(Karen Brown Bridge..pan to departure
screen, show delays)

Here in New York showers and patchy fog
are in the forecast for todaya

combination that is never good news for
air travelers.

Sot: mos from Karen

The rocky start comes just as the
federal government and the airlines are

teaming to provide some relief.
Starting tomorrow, military airspace
will be

opened in the northeastcreating an
express lane of sorts. Three quarters
of

all delays are traced to the New York
area and improvements there will likely

be felt across the nation. At Newark
and

Kennedy airports, planes can now use
runways simultaneously which is also

expected to ease congestion.

And while the new measures may
help.there s very little officials can
do about

the most common cause of delaysbad
weather.
