OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Roanoke << When Lori Niday got the call at
(END SOT) work Friday afternoon, she knew she was
in for a rough night.
"I was told to get home fast, my
house was on fire."
As Lori and her husband rushed to
the scene, her children were already
there.
Leslie Niday was coming home from
school when she saw smoke rising from
her home.
"We thought my little brother was
in there, but we saw him outside the
house with this other guy and they were
trying to get in to get the dog."
Leslie says she and her brothers
couldn't help but think about their
family dog Cheyenne, who was still
trapped in the house.
"We went and we busted the front
door trying to get in and we went into
the living room trying to search for
her, but it was too smoky."
Leslie watched as one of her
brothers risked his own life to try and
save Cheyenne - and the family cat.
"I wanted my Dog. That's all I
wanted was my dog and my cat"
Unfortunately this story does not
have a happy ending for the pets. Both
of them died in the fire. The house is
also a total loss. But the family is
trying to stay positive and look to the
future.
NATS OF ELECTRIC SAW
Friends spent the day boarding up
what's left of the house - getting
everything sealed up, since the Niday's
say they probably won't be coming back.
"I guess we're gonna have to
start over. Right now, we have no
home. All we have is what we have on
our backs and what the kids have."
"I don't know what we're gonna
do. Right now I'm just lost."

Center. A significant winter storm
which is pounding the upper Midwest and
the Great Lakes is going to provide
mostly cloudy skies for us tonight.
Lows are forecast in the 30s with light
wind.
While New England will begin to see
wintry weather unfold Sunday, we'll see
our own big changes. Sunday calls for
clouds and rain showers developing
during the day. High temperatures will
be cooler in the mid and upper 40s.
The biggest impact from this storm for
us will be the gusty northwest winds
that develop Sunday night through
Monday. There's already a High Wind
Watch in effect for the Highlands and
the New River Valley Sunday night
through Monday night. A Wind Advisory
will likely be issued for most of the
rest of the viewing area. Gusts may
approach 40-50mph Monday with colder
air advecting into the region. Brace
yourself for a chill, as highs are
forecast in the 40s for the upcoming
week.

SUNDAY: Showers develop. Cooler. High:

(END SOT) JAY SU: It's hard to believe this is
the last month of 2007, and as we dive
into December, average temperatures get
much colder.
++++++++++
Roanoke and Lynchburg expect highs in
the upper 40s this month, with mid 40s
around Blacksburg, and low 50s in
Danville. Overnight lows are frosty
across the region, ranging from the
low, mid and upper 20s.
++++++++++
SU: It's looking more and more likely
that we won't bust our drought before
the new year.
++++++++++
We average close to three-inches of
rain area-wide in December, but this
month is typically the driest of the
year for Roanoke and Blacksburg.
++++++++++
SU: Winter begins on December 22nd.
It's the shortest day of the year, and
the daylight increases from then until
June. But winter doesn't seem right
without snow.
++++++++++
Roanoke, Lynchburg and Blacksburg
average around 3.5 to nearly 5 inches
of snow this month, with considerably
less across the Southside.
++++++++++
The full moon is the called the Cold
Moon. Look for it two days before
Christmas at 8:16p.m. The Roanoke
Valley Astronomical Society reminds us
to look for the Geminid Meteor Shower
on the 14th. After 8:30p.m., look east.
You may see 100 meteors per hour! Also,
Mars will be a bright reddish color in
the east-northeast. It will be visible
all night - all month.

The Tornado's Joel Elswick drops
back and finds Matt Davis on the nice
throw. That connection put Richlands
in business in the red zone.
The combo hooked up again, this
time for a touchdown as Richlands
jumped out front 7 to nothing early in
the first quarter.
But the Bees would answer.
Logan Thomas shovels it over to Stacy
Houston. He breaks up the far sideline
on the 16 yard TD play tying the game
at 7 headed to the 2nd quarter.
The Blue Tornado came to life
again though. Elswick fires to his
favorite target Davis again. He takes
off getting plenty after the catch, and
it was 14-7 Richlands.
Late in the half, Elswick
hands to VT recruit Austin Fuller, who
goes in from 2 yards out to make it
21-7 Tornado at the half.

Nick Miller and the Hawks have bad
field
position, but it doesn't matter. On
this keeper, Miller
gets outside and has plenty of running
room, going down the sideline and
finding the endzone to make it 21-0
Gretna.
A few minutes later, Miller and
the Hawks are on the move again when
the freshman throws up the deep ball
and it comes down int the arms of Jayme
Barksdale who is in the
zone. The touchdown gave Gretna a
28-nothing lead, and the rout was on.
The defense did its part.
This is the kind of day it was
for King William. Lewis Redman gets
the ball, runs into his own
man, then a host of Hawks take him down
for a loss.
In the
*CG final Gretna third quarter Gretna had a few more
42 surprises. Miller flips the ball back
King William to Tyon Bennett who gets in for another
0 TD and the Hawks went on to win it big
42 to nothing.

it was 7-nothing Clintwood.
The Bath defense tried to

But they got plenty more
chances. The visitors scored twice
more to end the first half.

That would help the Blue Devils
cause as they tried to improve to 32

Today, about 55 pool players took
a break from their normal weekend
routines to play in a tournament at
Corned Beef - a popular bar downtown.
All of the proceeds will go to
Toys for Tots.
The only thing players had to do
to get in the game was bring a ten
dollar toy or make a ten dollar
donation.
Add that up, along with other
donations and the tourney raised about
two thousand dollars.
