NASA scrubbed the launch of the
Atlantis Thursday because of two
defective

fuel sensors.

With the hydrogen tank about 80 percent
full--engineers noticed that two of

the four low level sensors failed.

(SOT: DOUG LYONS/LAUNCH DIRECTOR)

"RIGHT AWAY WE KNEW WE HAD AN ISSUE"

The sensors are part of a backup system
to ensure the shuttle's three main

engines don't run dry. They monitor the
level of liquid hydrogen in the

external fuel tank.

And it could cause significant problems
if the sensors falsely indicate the

tank still has hydrogen in it at the
end of the climb to space when, in
fact,

it is empty.

(STANDUP: DREW LEVINSON/THE KENNEDY
SPACE CENTER)

"THIS IS NOT A FIRST FOR NASA...THE
SAME THING HAPPENED BACK IN JULY OF
2005,

WHEN THE SPACE AGENCY WAS ALL SET TO
RETURN TO SPACE FOR THE FIRST TIME
SINCE

THE COLUMBIA DISASTER"

(JULY 13, 2005)

With the Shuttle Discovery poised for
launch--a fuel sensor failed--and NASA

had to delay that mission until the
problem was resolved.

NASA has relaxed it own rules allowing
a launch with three of the four sensors

working--but since two apparently
malfunctioned-- Today in Florida, NASA

scrubbed the launch.

(SOT: LYONS)

"WE 'RE A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED IN THE
EVENTS"

If engineers can determine what exactly

the problem is and correct--NASA will

try to launch again on Friday.

Space Center.
