The Salem Sheriff was found dead
just about one hour ago at his home in
Salem...
Salem's city spokeswoman says Roger
Surber died of a self inflicted gunshot
wound.

Surber had apparently told his wife
early this morning that he was leaving

made for an ugly commute this morning
in western Virginia.
Freezing rain and slippery roads
lead to a rash of accidents. School
buses had to pull over in the Roanoke
Valley until the conditions improved.

Roanoke Valley and many of its drivers
by surprise. The icy glaze on the
region's roads and bridges was barely
visible...
And that proved to be a dangerous
combination... as police and wrecker
crews stayed busy cleaning up after
dozens of accidents.

the pavement iced over...Bus drivers
were told to pull over until the ice
cleared.

A number of major roads,
including U-S 29 and 460, were closed
by accidents and slick overpasses.
This is the Timberlake Road
bridge over 501.
It was closed for an hour or more as
crews tried to remove stuck cars and
treat the pavement.
Most schools in the Lynchburg
area closed for the day.

out of work in Pulaski County.

of January.
A Volvo Spokesperson says the
layoffs are necessary because of a
change in production levels.
This is the second round of
layoffs to hit the company in the last
year.
Volvo cut about 900 positions
during the first quarter of this year.
In recent months many of the
workers who were laid off, were
re-hired.
It now appears many of those SAME
employees will be laid off again.

the 19 year old high school dropout was
released from state custody. Hawkins
was put in a series of treatment

after threatening his stepmother.

Saturday starts with plenty of clouds
(20% sprinkle/shower) with partly sunny
skies developing by the afternoon.
Temperatures get a push into the mid
50s for the first day of the weekend.
Saturday night will be variably cloudy
with lows near 40.
Sunday is cloudy with a very slight
chance of a late afternoon or evening
shower, but generally it'll just be a
mainly cloudy day. Highs are forecast
near 60.
The beginning of next week will be
headlined with warmer temperatures.
Monday and Tuesday expect highs in the
mid and upper 60s with partly sunny
skies. Rain chances are very low during
this time period.
Wednesday calls for highs in the mid
60s with sun and clouds and a 30%
chance of showers. Rain chances move up
to 40% Thursday with cooler
temperatures as a front crosses the
NEWS7 viewing area.
