crews and a medical helicopter rushed
to the scene of an accident in Bedford
County this evening.

Witnesses say a man was driving
on the wrong side of Stewartsville Road
- that's between Stewartsville and
Chamblissburg when according to them,
he was about to hit another vehicle
head-on -- both cars swerved and the
guy hit a tree.
At least two people tried to pull
him out.
We're still waiting on more
details from the state police, but the
driver was airlifted to a local
hospital.

increase in accidents.

(END SOT) along Nemmo road since he was 10 years
old.
He still remembers when it was
just a quiet country path.
A far cry from today.
"I've never seen people drive
like they drive through here"
Pastel says just crossing the
road to check his mail can be a life or
death experience.
"Don't none of em drive on their
side of the road. They drive in the
middle."
Abon Cawley says the bad driving
has driven many people indoors.
"I know a lot of people that used
to get out and walk. They won't do it
now, cause the people's flying."
Between January of 2004 and May
of this year, police have responded to
14 accidents on Nemmo Road.
9 of those led to injuries.
3 people were killed.
Those deaths happened over
Memorial Day weekend in what some say
is the most serious crash along the
road to date.
The driver that caused this crash
was reportedly going more than 80 miles
an hour.
"I don't think they ever look at
the speedometer. I think they're just
following the road and never let off of
it."
Because of these accidents, V-DOT
has lowered the speed limit on Nemmo
Road from 55 to 40 miles an hour. And
while neighbors say that has helped
some, they say drivers still need to
slow down.
"Ain't nothing we can do.
Bedford County's got to do it. And if
they don't care enough about the people
in here to get out here and try to
figure out some way to stop this, it's
going to be a whole lot more getting
killed."
Cawley says drivers just need to
use a little common sense.
"Please slow down. Drive with a
little respect for the road and the
people that's out on the road walking."
Advice that could prevent another
bad accident on a road that's already
seen too many.

that served as headquarters for Michael
Vick's dog fighting operation drew a
steady stream of the curious today.

VO-NAT A real estate developer bought
the 15-acre spread -- which includes a
46-hundred square-foot house and many
remnants of the dogfighting enterprise
-- and plans to auction it off next
week.
Another open house is set for
Sunday.
Today's seemed to attract mostly
people who were plain curious,
including many who snapped photos.
Meanwhile, it looks like the
remaining dogs taken from Vick have
found new homes.
Forty-seven pit-bulls will be
placed with eight rescue organizations
-- including two here in Virginia.
A judge signed off on the plan
earlier this week on recommendations by
the court appointed guardian for the
dogs.
The transfers should take place
within the next month.
Vick faces up to five years in
prison when he's sentenced on Monday
for his role in a dogfighting
conspiracy that was run on his property
in Surry County.

bill that will provide a "tax
exemption"... for Virginia Tech
shooting victims and their families.
The bill is now headed to
President Bush.
If he approves it... the victims
and their families will NOT have to pay
federal income taxes on the payments
they've received from the Hokie Spirit
Memorial Fund.
In October, the fund shelled out
more than seven million dollars in
donations to 47 injured students and
the families of the 32 students and
staff who were killed on April 16th.

limit access to a database that list
all Virginians who are allowed to carry
concealed handguns.

The state police ended access to
the list on the advice of Attorney

teenager shot and killed eight people
re-opened today - three days after the
shooting.

hoping to add an extra sense of

All of the stores were ready for
customers except for Von Maur (MARR) -
the store where the killings took
place.
The company plans to re-open but
hasn't set a date yet.
Five others were also hurt
Wednesday before the shooter took his
own life.
Two of those people are still in
the hospital.

Deputies in Winter Haven, Florida
-- about 50 miles east of Tampa -- say
the argument got so heated it escalated
into a shooting.
Authorities say it all began when
a man went to confront his neighbor who
apparantly ran over his decorations.
The victim is expected to
survive.
He was shot in the stomach and
the arm.

wait a bit longer.

VO-NAT NASA has delayed the liftoff of
Atlantis until tomorrow at the
earliest.
It said it might tighten the
launch rules, at astronauts' request,
to cope with unreliable gauges in the
fuel tank.
Shuttle managers say they will
meet again tomorrow to decide whether
to accept that proposal and proceed.
Meanwhile, Leland Melvin and the
other astronauts are awaiting liftoff.
The 43-year-old Lynchburg native
is a former NFL player and wide
receiver at the University of Richmond.

hoping to win their second straight
state title against Sherando from
Stephens City. The Lancers had won 26
of their last 27 games.

that came from. Rose makes a great
read again, carving up the defense and
taking off, dashing 82 more yards.
Amherst was rolling, up 28 to 10 in the
third quarter.
Moore scored again, and the
*CG final Sherando Lancers drop the hammer on Sherando by
10 a final score of 56 to 10, for their
Amherst Co. second straight state championship.
