have killed at least four people in two
separate incidents in our area.

In Danville, flames broke out
around one this afternoon inside a
garage on Jefferson Avenue.
It took firefighters 20 minutes
to get it under control.
Two people died and a third
person was rushed to an out-of-state
burn center.
The cause is under investigation.

62nd wedding anniversary a few days
ago- also died in a house fire.
This one happend last night in
the Keeling community.

running in Vinton trying to save a home
on North Pollard street
Crews from both Vinton and Mount
Pleasant came out...but the fire had
already destroyed a lot of the inside
and out.
Authorities say the family - who
was inside at the time made it out
safely.
The cause of this fire is also
under investigation.

91-year-old man in Roanoke - made it
out of his burning home.

Firefighters arrived on Rosemary
Avenue shortly before nine A-M.
They majority of the damage was
in the back of the house.
The 91-year-old was treated at
Roanoke Memorial for breathing in too
much smoke.
Authorities say the fire did
about 50 thousand dollars worth of
damage to the home.

the head.

inside this residence on Mountain View
Road in Vinton after someone called
9-1-1.
She was taken to Roanoke Memorial
- but no word if she pulled through the
night.
Authorities have not released the

business.
But that job kept him on the road
and away from his family.

locally and spend more time with my
parents who were in declining health."

So Stapp started looking for jobs
close to home, but finding work in
Danville wasn't easy.

brick wall and I was very discouraged.
I knew that I had talent and I knew
that I had skills, but I didn't know
how to apply them to get a job around

That's when Stapp started taking
classes at Danville's Regional Center
for Advanced Technology and Training.
Today, he's learning how to work
in a new field - one that's based in
technology.
Local leaders say education like
this will be key in helping southside
residents find new, high-tech jobs.

we've had have been job losses that
didn't require an educated workforce
and that's been quite a curse on the
community at this point in time and
that's what we need to change."

back to school because they don't think
they can afford it, but state officials
are hoping to get more money for this
region, so that anymore who wants to go
back to school will have the chance.

State officials like Governor
Kaine are working to get federal money
to create more jobs and better access
to workforce training programs.

A Georgia Bureau of Investigation
spokesman says investigators have
evidence to believe that 24-year-old
Meredith Emerson may be dead.
She disappeared New Year's Day
after going hiking with her dog in
Union County, Georgia.
Police located Gary Michael
Hilton Friday night at a gas station in
DeKalb County.
Investigators say Hilton was seen
on the hiking trails talking to
Emerson.
Hilton has been charged with
kidnapping with intent to do bodily
injury.
Meanwhile the search for her

Further West, non-stop snow is
creating problems.
Sixty thousand people in the
greater Sacramento area were without
power this morning.
In Sierra Nevada, the fear is the
mixture of snow and heavy rains will
trigger mudslides.
Up to 44 inches of snow has
fallen in some parts already.
Forecasters expect the storm to
dump as much as 10 feet on the mountain

Center. Skies will remain cloudy for
the rest of the night. Look for a few
light showers, mainly north and west of
the Roanoke Valley. Lows will be cool,
but not as cold around the mid 30s.
Sunday starts with clouds and a few
showers, then partly to mostly cloudy
skies for the rest of the day. Highs
are forecast in the mid 50s with a
southwest breeze.
Monday and Tuesday continue to be in a
southwesterly flow pushing temperatures
to the mid 60s. We could see record
warmth! Skies will be partly sunny.
By early Wednesday, a strong cold front
moves through providing showers and
highs in the 50s. While cooler, the
front won't bring extremely chilly air
like we've felt recently.

VO-NAT Zach Hegelson a senior at Hidden
Valley who is headed to Maryland next
season won an international Power Swing
competition in Tampa, Florida. He won
the event this evening with 16 Home
Runs in 45 swings, beating out players
from all over North America.

in playoff mode ever since they lost to
Buffalo to drop their record to 5 and
7. Since then the Skins have won 4
straight to get themselves into the
actuall Playoffs.
Could they continue there magical
run since they buried their teammate
Sean Taylor.

on the road in an N-F-C Wild Card Game.
The Seahawks would score the
games first touchdonw on Leonard
Weaver's 17 run. Seattle would
eventually go up by a score of 13 to
nothing and took that lead into the 4th
quarter.
Then the Skins really got things
going. Todd Collins will find Antwaan
Randle El on the 7 yard touchdown pass,
finishing off a 12 play 84 yard drive.
The Defense would get their "O"
right back on the field as the rookie
Laron Landry picks off Matt
Hasselback's pass and Washington was in
business again.
And it took just 3 plays to
capitolize as Collins goes up top to
Santana Moss that was good for a 30
yard Touchdown and the Skins had theire
first lead at 14 to 13.
But Washington couldn't hold it,
Matt Hasselback hit D.J. Hackett on a
20 yard touchdown pass, that and a 2
point conversion gave Seattle a 7 point
lead.

14 things had 2 Passes returned for
Seattle Touchdowns and the Seahawks bring an
35 end to Washington's run with the 35 to
14 win.

pass.
Brady is the first Patriot to be
named NFL MVP and received 49
of a possible 50 votes. Green Bay

played Monday Night in New Orleans
between L-S-U and Ohio State.
The 2 Head Coachs in this game
have vastly different personalities and
different experiences when it comes to
the B-C-S National Title game.
The Buckeyes Head Coach Jim
Tressell won a title back in 2-thousand
and 2, but came up short last season.
For Les Miles, this is his first
trip to the Title game as the Tigers
Head Coach and he gets to play it in
the Home State of his University.
