A major discovery in the lab could one
day explain what causes autism in
children like Tyler Bell .
(NATS)
Geneticist David Miller... from Boston
Children's Hospital....
says(ANIMATION-CBS) the discovery lies
deep in the human genome.
We all have 23 pairs of chromosomes.
But in a very small number of autistic
kids scientists found a mutation.
In one particular chromosome these
children were either missing D-N-A
material
or had too much of it.
(SOT-Dr. David Miller/Children's
Hospital Boston)
" IT WOULD BE LIKE A RECIPE WHERE IF
YOU ADDED TWICE AS MUCH SALT OR HALF AS
MUCH SALT AND IT CHANGES HOW THE RECIPE
TURNS OUT .. BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS IN
A DELICATE BALANCE, ESPECIALLY INSIDE
THE HUMAN BRAIN."
(STANDUP: Dr. Mallika Marshall/CBS
NEWS/Boston, MA)
But exactly how this mutation may lead
to autism is still unknown.
Scientists still have to figure out
what causes it and find out if these
abnormalities are present in all
autistic children or just a select
few.
(NATS)
In the near future scientists hope to
use this technology to identify
autistic
kids at an earlier age.
(SOT-David Miller/Children's Hospital
Boston)
"SO IF ITS A PUZZLE THAT HAS 100 PIECES
THIS IS ONE PIECE."
.
(NATS)(Pennington, NJ)
All this is very exciting for tyler's
parents.
His dad also works for Autism Speaks
which aided in the research.
(SOT-Peter Bell/Tyler's Father)
"THERE'S A PALPABLE SENSE WITHIN THE
COMMUNITY THAT SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT IS
GOING TO BREAK.
(SOT- Elizabeth Bell/Tyler's Mom)
THERE IS THIS SEARCH AND NEED TO FIND
AN ANSWER FOR WHAT MADE THIS HAPPEN."
Science is now one step closer to that
answer.

APRISA WEATHER MINI OPEN
<
cloudy tonight ahead of our next
rain-maker. Rain showers will
overspread the region from the
Mississippi Valley early Thursday
morning. In a few of the deeper
valleys, at or below freezing
temperatures may cause a bit of
freezing rain at the onset. The
freezing rain threat would be
short-lived, as highs reach the mid
40s. Periods of heavy rain are possible
late Thursday night and early Friday as
a cold front moves to the east. Some
areas west of the Roanoke Valley could
get around 1.00" of much needed rain
Friday and Saturday are dry and partly
sunny. Highs are forecast in the low to
mid 50s. An area of low pressure is
forecast to develop off the Carolina
coast during the day Saturday, and
depending on the exact track, it could
bring some rain or snow showers Sunday
and Sunday night. We'll keep monitoring
this and bring you the latest on-air>>

OQ=Grant Kittelson << The Brookville Girls Basketball
(END SOT) Teams has gotten off to a perfect start
this season at 12 and oh.
And the Bee's have done it with 2
Division 1 signees leading the way,
Brittany Campbell is headed to Liberty
and Joyous Tharrington will be taking
her game to the University of Richmond
next season.
There is no doubt that
Tharrington and Campbell are talented,
but both are versatile as well
(JOY BITE:)
(BRITTANY BITE:)
(COACH BITE:)
(STANDUP:)
One of those teammates may have
the best basketball knowledge of
anyone, Emily Dunton is the daugher of
former liberty Flames Head Coach Randy
Dunton and sometimes she will be the
one suggesting halftime adjustments to
her current head coach.
(EMILEE BITE:)
The combination of talent and
coaching could take the Bees a long way
into the post-season, they already own
a win over Defending State Champion
Hidden Valley this season, due in large
part to a different attitude than last
season when they lost to the Titans.
(BITES:)
The Bees have 10 games remaining
in their regular season, including 8
District contests. For Hometown Hoops
weekly, I'm grant kittelson.

Police want to know who masterminded
the robbery.
The paintings are worth millions of
dollars.
They were recovered earlier this
week when one suspect led police to a
house on the outskirts of Sao Paulo-
(sow- paul-o) in Brazil.
A helicopter and dozens of police
vehicles made sure the paintings were
returned to the museum of art.
