today.
The child was struck this morning
by a vehicle that just didn't stop.

section of the county around one
o'clock this morning.
They found Brandy O'Neal dead
from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Her ex-husband, Kevin Dean O'Neal

He died at the hospital.
The two were divorced and shared
custody of the children.
Investigators believe Brandy went
to the home to pick up her children
when Kevin shot her.

Covington Paperworkers Union Local
6-7-5 gathered to picket an appearance
by the United Steelworkers President at
Covington High School yesterday.
The labor groups have been at
odds since union members at
MeadWestvaco's Covington paper mill
voted to cut ties with the Steelworkers
after more than a year of failed
contract negotiations.

today at Daytona as NASCAR's second
week of preseason testing opened up at
the World Center of Racing.
This is the week that Dale Junior
gets his first chance to drive his new
Hendrick Motorsports Chevy.

VO-NAT Dale Junior was solid as
expected. He was second fastest today
with a lap at 184 point 646 miles an
hour. Tomorrow is also his day at
Daytona to talk to the media.
Just under 30 drivers in all took
part in the first day of testing
including the new face of Budweiser
Kasey Kahne.
Defending Daytona 500 champion
Kevin Harvick struggled on the track
today, but his teammate Jeff Burton.
Both were over 4 miles an hour off the
top speed of the day.
Burton served up some
controversial comments today when he
was asked the drivers of today were as
talented as those of the past.

London, who is now 47, is a
graduate of UR where he played under
Dal Shealy and was a starting defensive
back in the early 80s. He's also
coached at Richmond as an assistant.
London has the backing of a
number of alumni to succeed Dave
Clawson.
As we told you on Saturday night,
Virginia Tech's defensive coach and
recruiting coordinator Jim Cavanaugh
also has interest in the job. Coach
Cav is a William & Mary with many ties
to that part of the state.

the new polls released tonight. UNC is

In Blacksburg the Hokies big
freshman Jeff Allen picked up one of
the ACC's weekly awards this afternoon.

rebounds, five steals, three blocked
shots and made the game-winning free
throw with 12.4 seconds left to play as
Virginia Tech posted a 67-66
come-from-behind victory over Maryland

rebounds, 3.5 steals, 2.5 blocked shots
and 2.0 assists in Tech's two wins.
The Hokies travel to

Atlanta's Triple A farm club is leaving
the City of Monuments, however, it's
unclear when that departure will take
place. It could as soon as after this
upcoming season.
GRPAHIC=MACHO And Macho Harris, the Virginia
Tech cornerback from Highland Springs
is apparently reconsidering his
decision to enter the NFL draft. The
Richmond native is supposed to put his
name in the hat tomorrow which is the
deadline for underclassmen to enter,
but he then has 72 hours to withdraw it
and indications are that he is
considering a return to Tech for his
senior year.
