mstevens@wdbj7.com It's time now for this week's
edition of Hometown Hoops Weekly and
the focus this week is on the Floyd
County Lady Buffaloes, in particular,
guard Kayla McAlexander.
McAlexander is hearing impaired,
but as Travis Wells explains, the
senior guard is anything but impaired
when it comes to hooping it up.

athlete on the court at Floyd County,
but the fact that she is on the court
is amazing in itself.
McAlexander was stricken with
meningitis when she was 2 years old,
which robbed her of her hearing.
But she hasn't let that stop her from
contributing to a Buffaloes team that
is 17 and 2, including an 8 and oh mark
in the Three Rivers District. For
Kayla, communication has become a help,
not a hindrance.
KAYLA MCALEXANDER/FLOYD COUNTY GUARD:
ALAN CANTRELL/FLOYD COUNTY HEAD COACH:
McAlexander has refused to listen
to any doubters. She will graduate
later this year, but not before making
herself heard loud and clear.
LINDSEY THOMPSON/FLOYD COUNTY GUARD:
Kayla's hearing hasn't been the only
obstacle. She is also fighting back
from a knee injury. But neither has
succeeded in slowing her down. Travis
Wells, Hometown Hoops Weekly.>>

Monday Lynchburg native Leland Melvin and
fellow crewmembers of the space shuttle
Atlantis have been cleared for liftoff
tomorrow.
But weather prospects for the afternoon
show just a 40 percent chance of
favorable conditions.
Space agency officials say they are
confident they've solved mechanical
problems that postponed the mission
several times in December.

Some call Stephen Wiltshire a human
camera. He can draw entire cities from
memory.
After seeing a city in a 45-minute
helicopter ride, Wiltshire can paint so
accurately, that he even knows the
correct number of windows in each
building.
This week he is flying over the city
of Madrid and he is going to make an
entire portrait of the city from
memory.
