More than 700 firefighters are on
the front lines tonight, battling
forest fires across the state.
High wind, with gusts up to 75
miles an hour blew through the
Commonwealth -- bringing down power
lines that sparked at least 18 of the
fires.
More than six thousand acres have
burned so far. That's already more
than half the number of acres that
burned in 2007.

It's in an area known as "Little
Cuba..." all within the National
Forest. There are no homes nearby.
It's taken a while to measure the
scope of the fire... now estimated at
18-hundred acres.
Firefighters won't be able to
actually begin work on it until
tomorrow.
While they expect additional
manpower by then, strong wind, dry
conditions and difficult terrain are
making it difficult to get to the fire.

tomorrow's presidential primary.
Power is out at 20 polling places
statewide.. down from 50 at the
beginning of the day.
Three precincts in Roanoke city,
four in Roanoke County and two in
Botetourt County are without power.
Roanoke County has made one
change- voters in the Bennett Springs
and Mason Valley precincts who usually
vote at Mountain Pass Baptist church
and Mason Cove Elementary will instead
vote at a new location-- Mason Cove
Fire Station on Bradshaw Road.

Roanoke apartment complex was caused by
some sort of smoking materials.

It happened at the Summertree
apartments around seven this morning
near Tanglewood Mall.
Seven apartments were damaged.
Investigators say the fire
started in a bedroom and then spread to
the attic.
People inside the apartment where
the fire started warned their
neighbors.
All of the tenants and their pets
got out safely.
The building has been condemned.
Nine adults and seven
children are being helped by the
American Red Cross.
Other residents have been moved
to other apartments or are staying with
friends.

that fire are staying at the Red Cross
shelter at the Roanoke Civic Center.
This shelter started taking in
people last night who were without
power.
Volunteers provided hot meals and
warm place to stay.
30 people spent the night or
morning at the Civic Center's Exhibit
Hall.

County led investigators to someone
they consider a major drug trafficker
in Southwestern Virginia.

Deputies got a tip and searched Ellis
Sutherland- Junior's home in Speedwell.
They say they found five pounds
of marijuana and nearly 10-thousand
dollars in cash.
Investigators say Sutherland
helped them make another, larger drug
bust.

Bristol and Tyrone Davis of Chilhowie
(CHILL-howie) were arrested and now
face felony drug charges including
racketeering.
March was also wanted by federal
Marshals for drug charges in
Pennsylvania.

allegedly abused and ultimately killed
by his mother's boyfriend.
William Shelton is charged with
second-degree murder.
The sheriff's office received a
call Saturday morning that a 14-month
old boy wasn't breathing.

the Plum Creek section of Montgomery
County.
The toddler died in the hospital
Saturday.

Center. A low pressure system coming
out of the Gulf States will move into
the Ohio Valley and eventually through
southwest Virginia Tuesday. Most
areas will remain dry tonight with
increasing clouds. A few mountain snow
showers are possible Tuesday (40%) with
other hometowns seeing a few light rain
showers during the afternoon. Winds
will increase a bit in the mountains as
a front passes late Tuesday (20-25mph),
but nothing like that we saw over the
weekend. The best chance of steadier
rain will arrive late Tuesday night and
Wednesday, where .25 to .50" rain could
fall through Wednesday afternoon.
Sunshine and warmer weather return
Thursday and most of Friday. The
weekend will see a few rain/snow
showers with highs in the 40s. MONDAY
