in the region out of their homes last
night and into emergency shelters.

A Red Cross shelter was also
opened inside Montavle Elementary
School.

That shelter was originally set
up as an evacuation point for residents
fleeing the nearby brush fires, but
volunteers worked to provide
accommodations for anyone that needed
it.

GRAPHIC=Wind Damage High winds have caused trouble

througout the area.

VO-NAT Yesterday, a chaotic scene with

trees on top of cars and power lines
knocked down everywhere.

At this point, Appalachian Power
reports about 69-thousand customers are
still in the dark.

Dominion says roughly 35-thousand
customers are without electricity.

A spokesperson with Appalachian
says it could be Wednesday before
everything is back on.

state of emergency in Virginia.

He's directing state agencies to
take all necessary actions to aid in
the response to the multiple wildfires
that have broken out across the
Commonwealth.

A declaration of emergency allows
the Governor to immediately deploy
state personnel, equipment, and other
emergency response resources, and to
coordinate state and local response to
the event.

In addition, the Governor has
authorized the activation of Virginia
National Guard personnel and equipment
to assist with fighting wildfires.

viewing area, sparking fires from
Roanoke County to Pittsylvania County.

Bedford County Saturday afternoon has
now spread into a serious fire -
already devouring as many as 500 acres
by Sunday morning.

Dozens of people including Loretta
Reaves were told to pack up and leave
their homes.

accused of abusing a child, who has now
died.

Twenty-eight year old William
Shelton is charged with felony child
abuse, those charges however could be
upgraded.

office received a call Saturday morning
that a 14-month old baby boy wasn't
breathing.

He was in a home in the
33-hundred block of Brookside Drive in
the Plum Creek section of Montgomery
County.

endorsing the idea of a pause in the
drawdown of U- S forces from

Iraq this summer.

It's the first time Gates has
publicly endorsed the idea.

Super Tuesday probably locked down the

race around - but they do underline
some

fragile support for McCain. And if
anyone in his camp is counting on

Huckabee to make life easier by
dropping out, they shouldn't hold their

knocked down everywhere.

At this point, Appalachian Power
reports about 69-thousand customers are
still in the dark.

Dominion say roughly 35-thousand
customers are without electricity.

A spokesperson with Appalachian
says it could be Wednesday before
everything is back on.

tried to put out the last of flames on
Candlers Mountain.

About 10 acres burned.

Crews were aggressively
working to protect several homes and
