Hillary Clinton hoped to fare better..
but she had only about half the votes..
Barack Obama the favorite among the

proportionately.

That means while Obama won Virginia,
Clinton picks up about one third of the
54 delegates in the process at stake
here.

clinton- with nearly all of the
precincts reporting in.

one interesting note in Maryland
Keith is that polls stayed open until
9:30 because of bad weather.. those
voting between 8 and 9:30 voted on
provisional paper ballots- as required

by federal law and those votes will not
be tallied until next week

Obama and McCain also came out the
winners in the District of Columbia.

Two thirds of the vote among
Washington, D-C residents went to
McCain. The Arizona Senator 67
percent... former Governor Mike
Huckabees with 17-percent.

A similar lopsided proportion in
D-C for Obama, though not quite such a
hammering win... The Illinois Senator
picks up 63-percent of the vote among
Washington residents, to Clinton's
36-percent.

Roanoke.

Two precincts moved to the William
Fleming High school gym because of
power outtages.

While Westside voters were able to
cast their ballots quickly, the line
for the Ruffner precinct was more than
100 voters deep at times, the wait more
than an hour.

Some people left in frustration,
but others said they were determined to
stay as long as it took to vote.

Despite some power outages in our
region- state officials say no major
problems were reported.

This is the first dual
presidential primary Virginia has held
in 20- years

that... some voters were upset they had
to reveal which primary they wanted to
vote in... The Republican or
Democratic...

Early numbers indicate MORE
Virginians requested ballots for the

of Elections estimates nearly 40-
percent of registered voters turned
out.... she calls it an "amazing"
day... one that will go down in the

contained - Roanoke County's Fire Chief
says they're gaining ground on the
Green Ridge Mountain Fire.

burned in the fire that started on

Sunday.

At one point, you could see the
fire from Interstate 81, but Chief Rick
Burch birch says since then it has
jumped firelines and is now burning in
a mountain ridgetop area -heading
towards Carvins Cove Road.

Burch says crews will now work on
another fireline and hope the rain will
help.

grown....foresty officials say downed
power lines started it.

That fire has spread to more than

But crews say they made a lot of

Firefighters welcomed some
rain this afternoon near Smith Mountain
Lake.

They've been trying to
contain a fire off Tolers Ferry Road.
And they've been pretty successful.

The fire started with a
downed power line and spread to several
hundred acres.

About 40 Virginia National
Guard troops came in today to assist
state forestry workers and volunteer
firefighters.

in Bedford County is nearly contained.

Crews say the Blackhorse Gap
fire near Montvale is 90-percent
contained. They hope it will be fully
contained tomorrow.

All road closures and
evacuations have been lifted.

That fire's burned about
14-hundred acres.

Bishop established a similar academic
program at her last job and it produced
some positive results with the

overwhelmingly passed a bill that
requires drivers convicted of driving
under the influence install ignition
interlock systems in their cars.

The requirement takes affect
after the first offense.

Offenders would have to blow into
the device every time they start their
car.

Ignition interlocks would have to
be installed on every vehicle the
offenders owns... even family vehicles
that others drive.

Center. With a wedge of colder air at
the surface, and warm air moving
overhead, light showers and drizzle
will stick around through the evening.
Temperatures north of the Roanoke
Valley will be close to freezing this
evening, so areas of sleet and even a
pocket of freezing rain is possible.
Amounts will be light, but use caution.
Overnight, a low pressure system will
move in from the south bringing
measurable rain in around 2AM, and will
stick around until around Noon
Wednesday. Rainfall amounts will be
around .50" or more, with some heavier
downpours possible toward sunrise. Warm
air will try to break the cold wedge
tonight with temperatures holding
steady or even rising a couple of
degrees.The cold front will push rain
out early in the afternoon, with slow
clearing late. Winds will increase a
bit as a front passes, but nothing like
what we saw over the weekend. Wednesday

SPEED - Last Friday Today NASCAR kept its word by :00 putting Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart on
probation for the first six races of
the new NASCAR

season. This is in reaciton to their
on-track confrontation on Friday night
during Cup practice for the Bud
Shootout.

The two drivers wrecked in
practice and then carried it onto pit
road. It's widely believed that Stewart

punched Busch, but no one will confirm
or deny the speculation. Neither

Hometown Station against the North
Carolina Tarheels.

Carolina came into the game with
a 22 and 2 record - UVA was right at
500 at 11 and 11.

But the Tarheels didn't miss a

Now it looked like UVA would just
fold at that point, but instead the
Cavaliers showed a lot of character.
Senior Sean Singletary led a furious
UVA comeback as the Cavs regained the
lead with 3:40 to play in the first

break after the Wayne Ellington jumper.

UVA would not go away and with 51
seconds to play Calvin Baker hit this
three pointer to get the Cavs within

known to football fans in Virginia and
the south.

Sparky Woods will replace Jim
Reid and become the 30th football coach
in VMI's 117 year history.

at Appalachian State and the University
of South Carolina, plus he has served
as an offensive coach at a number
division one schools including UVA,

-- but J-R-R Tolkien's estate hasn't
seen a dollar of that money.

original "Lord of the Rings" publisher
HarperCollins filed the lawsuit against
New Line Cinema in Los Angeles
Superior Court.

If successful, it could block the
long-awaited prequel to the films.

The suit claims New Line Cinema
was required to pay seven and a half
percent of gross reciepts to Tolkien's
estate.

A spokesman for Time Warner

Inc.'s New Line declined to comment.
