The rain has helped slow
the spread of the Green Ridge Mountain
fire in Roanoke County, though

figure out why small plane crashed in
North Carolian two weeks ago.

February 1 They say there is no evidence of
mechanical problems or fire in a
twin-engine plane that nose-dived in a
Mount Airy neighborhood, killing six.
The group was heading to the
Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan,
Virginia.
According to a preliminary report
from the National Transportation Safety
Board, the plane came in too high and
missed its initial approach.
Investigators say the aircraft
continued banking to the left and
started climbing again, before
nose-diving out of the clouds and
crashing into a back yard.

challenger Mike Huckabee kept it closer
than
expected in Virginia.

tonight."
Huckabee still attracts hard core
conservatives, but McCain's lead is now
practically insurmountable. Of course

Obama.
That likely explains why Hillary
Clinton is criss-crossing Texas today
....and
looking for a big boost from the
Lone-Star State.

In Roanoke voters proved it would
be pretty tough to keep them away from
the polls yesterday.
Some folks waited over 60 minutes
to cast their ballot at William Fleming
High school-- which was hosting two
precincts because of power outtages.
While Westside voters were able
to cast their ballots quickly, the line
for the Ruffner precinct was more than
100 voters deep at times, the wait more
than an hour.
Some people left in frustration,
but others said they were determined to
stay as long as it took to vote.

The study done by mortgage
research company RealtyTrac says
slightly more than one- half percent of
homes in Virginia were in some stage
of foreclosure in 2007.
The national average for 2007 was
slightly more than one percent.
In Virginia, more than
24-thousand homes foreclosed last year.
Nationally, there were more than
two million homes in foreclosure in
2007.
The study says California led the
nation last year with more than 481,000
homes in foreclosure.

in Charlottesville last night, playing
against ACC rivals, the North Carolina
Tarheels.
Carolina came into the game with
a 22 and 2 record - UVA was right at
500 at 11 and 11.

Lawson still out, and Marcus Ginyard

But the Tarheels didn't miss a
beat, and Carolina escaped with a
75-to-74 win while Virginia falls to 11
and 12 on the season-- losing its 10th
game of its last 11.

football coach, and he should be a
familiar face to football fans in
Virginia and the south.
Sparky Woods will replace Jim
Reid and become the 30th football coach
in VMI's 117- year history.

1997 Woods has been both a head coach
at Appalachian State and the University
of South Carolina.
Plus, he has served as an offensive
coach at a number of division one
schools, including UVA.
There he served under George Welsh as
the Cavs offensive coordinator, and
coached among others Aaron Brooks.
He will be officially introduced
on post this Friday afternoon.
