In all, about 33 hundred acres
have burned in Roanoke County and at
this point the fire's only 75 percent
contained.
Fresh flames and smoke could be
seen pouring from Brushy Mountain near
Carvins Cove Road today.
Crews spent the day backburning
along the Hi-dee-hoe trail hoping to
decrease the fuel for the fire.
Backburning will continue through
the night.
We're told homes were not in

OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Montgomery << Clearing out the mountain debris
County is something the staff at Camp Altamons
(END SOT) has to do every year around this time.
NATS OF CHAINSAW
But this year - that process will
be a lot more complicated.
Amanda Masching: "There are
always trees down. You hear them
crackling every once in a while, but
never anything to this extent."
Heavy winds hit this camp hard -
knocking down trees, destroying
buildings, and leaving behind nearly
20-thousand dollars worth of damage.
"There were a number of trees
down in this hollow we're standing in
here. It totaled about 30 plus trees."
The most expensive damage
happened to a set of cabins in the
boy's camp.
They'll have to be torn down and
re-built, but camp officials say it
could have been much worse.
"If this had happened in the
summertime, it's possible campers would
have been in these cabins, actually
sleeping and it could have been
severe."
"And to make matters worse, these
cabins were actually brand new. The
one you see behind me here was built
less than two years ago."
"I was amazed because you look at
these cabins from either end and you
can't necessarily tell they're damaged.
You go around the side and there's a
great big tree straight through the
middle."
NATS OF CHAINSAW
The focus now is on getting this
site cleaned up and ready for campers.
And with the help of more than 50
volunteers, they're making some
progress.
"We couldn't possibly be prepared
for summer camp this summer if it
wasn't for help like this."
And with any luck, they hope to
get there, one log at a time.

Investigators are learning more about
the shooter. A recent honors grad of

spent time at this Chicago psychiatric
treatment center after high school.
Most recently, university officials say

Empty drink bottles, clothes and cold
medicine containers litter room 105.
The hotel manager says Kazmierczak paid
him in cash for a 3-day stay. That
ended Thursdaythe day he walked onto
campus and opened fire. Authorities say
he bought all four guns legally. He
purchased some of his military style
ammunition online from the same dealer
who supplied the Virginia Tech shooter.
Today, parents of N-I-U university
students gathered to demand better gun

Lows are forecast in the mid 30s. A few
isolated areas could dip to the low
30s, meaning a brief period of light
freezing rain early Sunday morning.
Most of us won't have to deal with that
- in fact, most of us will stay dry
until Sunday afternoon. By that point,
temperatures will be well above
freezing.
Low pressure will track across the
western Great Lakes Sunday, but this
will pull southeasterly winds and Gulf
and Atlantic moisture into our region.
SkyTracker7 Forecast models are
indicating showers developing Sunday
afternoon and lasting until early
Monday morning, when a cold front
crosses the area. Rain amounts could be
over 0.50" - that's good news for
firefighting efforts. Highs Sunday are
forecast in the upper 40s.
Temperatures will be steady Sunday
night in the mid and upper 40s. Highs
are expected near 50 Monday as skies
turn partly sunny. Tuesday and
Wednesday also look partly sunny, but
brisk with high temperatures cooler in
the low and mid 40s.
SATURDAY NIGHT: Clouds gather. Isolated
shower. Low: 35
SUNDAY: Clouds with showers developing.
High: 48
Have a great night! Meteorologist Jay

won three nights ago, and Hidden Valley
had plenty of respect for Pulaski, the
Titans only loss of the season came at
the hands of the Cougars.
The Titans opened with a flurry
of hoops as senior Luke Hancock drives
to the hole. He was one of five Hidden
Valley players to score in double
figures.
Another one of those was Zach
Barrett who explodes to the rack off
the left side. Hidden Valley led by as
many as 11 in the 2nd quarter.
But Pulaski mounted a furious
comback. Shay Dunnigan gets the great
assist to Carter White and he gets the
friendly bounce on the iron.
Jared King had his usual solid
game, hitting a barrage of three
pointers, scoring a game high 21 points
as Pulaski cut it to 2 at halftime.
But Hidden Valley handled the
pressure well in the second half. Chad
Earhart bounces to Logan Singleton and
the big fella finishes with the deuce
to expand the lead.
Nelson Musselman did his part
with the two handed jam on the fast
break.

But things went south from the
start, when Carolina scored the game's
first 6 points. The Heels hit their
first four shots and built a double
digit lead in the first five minutes.
The Hokies went just 7-for-27 in
the first half, including 1-for-9 from
3-point range, then missed their first
nine shots after the break as the Tar
Heels steadily increased the lead.
Tyler Hansbrough scored 23 and Wayne
Ellington added 19.
Malcolm Delaney was the lone
bright spot for Tech, leading the way
with 20 points on the afternoon.
But Tech was outrebounded 54
to 24 and fell 92 to 53, dropping to 5
and 6 in the ACC, 14 and 11 overall.
