OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Franklin << When shots were fired at the One

County Stop Convenience store Saturday night,
(END SOT) it didn't take long for neighbors in

the Doe Run and Tripple Creek Road area
to take notice.

Mickey Bowles: "I was sitting in

my living room and I heard a loud gun
shot and then I saw Paten laying in the
parking lot."

Franklin County Sheriff's
Officials say 49-year-old Paten Hodges
was shot with a high power rifle by his
nephew, John Hodges.

NATS OF CASH REGISTER

Doc Spray was working inside the
convenience store when the shooting
happened.

He heard the gunshots and went
outside the store, where he was met
with a message from John.

Doc Spray: "I warned him is what
he said to me. I mean he looked me
right in the eye and said I warned him.
And I'm thinking who and what."

Moments later, Spray saw Paten
laying on the ground.

That's when he called 911.

Darlene Wray also works at the
store and watched rescue crews try to
save Paten.

"I figured he'd be ok when I seen
him because I seen him move when I got
here."

Paten didn't make it - he died
during surgery at Roanoke Memorial
Hospital.

"The Wrays say that John had just
married Paten's ex wife Janice a few
weeks ago. And they've been joking
about the marriage here at the
convenience store."

"I'd horse around with John about
getting married and I'd say well, how's
the honeymoon?"

Neighbors say the marriage may
have sparked the shooting.

Still, workers at the One Stop
say they never saw any signs of trouble
between the two men.

"They're always joking around.
They're always coming in and that's
what's weird. I never would have
pictured John doing that."

"These two guys come in the
convenience store all the time, never
had no trouble out of either one of
them. It's just hard to believe that
it happened here."

< Webb in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. Showers are likely Sunday night
as a warm front lifts north of the
region, followed by a cold front. All
this will take place fairly quickly. By
Monday morning, clouds will already be
breaking up across the area (just a 20%
chance of a morning shower - mainly
east of the Blue Ridge). Temperatures
Sunday night should rise a few degrees.
Lows will be mild in the mid and upper
40s. A few lower 50s are possible.

Increasing sunshine is expected Monday
with highs in the mid and upper 50s.
While pleasant, these comfortable
temperatures will occur fairly early in
the day. Westerly winds (10-20mph with
gusts near 30mph) will pull in cooler
air during the afternoon and evening
hours. Sharply colder temperatures are
forecast with mostly clear skies Monday
night. Lows are forecast around 30
degrees. With busy west winds and cool

temperatures, wind chill values near
the single digits are possible Tuesday
morning.

Midwest high pressure will provide
sunny skies Tuesday; but it will be
brisk. Highs are slated in the lower
40s. Low and mid 40s are forecast
Wednesday with partly sunny skies.
(NOTE: Occasional upslope snow showers
in West Virginia and the Alleghany
Highlands are possible Monday though
Wednesday. A few inches could result in
the most favored locations.)

Confidence is low for the late-week
forecast. Right now, it looks like a
stationary boundary will zig-zag across
the mid-Atlantic with disturbances
riding along it. This could bring rain
and snow showers to the area. Highs are
forecast near 40 - but temperatures
could be warmer - we'll have to wait
and see!

SUNDAY NIGHT: Showers with steady
temperatures: Low: 46

MONDAY: Partly sunny. Breezy. Falling
temperatures. High: 57 (early)
