For several thousand dollars a

steel track belt that simulates speeds
and race conditions up to 180 miles an

JEFFREY BORDNER
The air is forced over, under and

powered by a 51 hundred horsepower
motor.
The race car is strapped down to
the stainless steel belt that is only 1

under the tires and the steel belt
drives the wheels simulating motion
across a race track. The entire
process takes place on a turntable
allowing engineers to measure downforce
and sideforce on the car.

Some would argue that with all of
the teams running the same body style
with the car of tomorrow under precise
templates - that this type of testing
is now obsolete - but in fact finding
any of edge is now more critical than
ever.
