OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Franklin << When shots were fired at the One

County Stop Convenience store Saturday night,
(END SOT) it didn't take long for neighbors in

the Doe Run and Tripple Creek Road area
to take notice.

Mickey Bowles: "I was sitting in
my living room and I heard a loud gun
shot and then I saw Paten laying in the
parking lot."

Franklin County Sheriff's
Officials say 49-year-old Paten Hodges
was shot with a high power rifle by his
nephew, John Hodges.

NATS OF CASH REGISTER

Doc Spray was working inside the
convenience store when the shooting
happened.

He heard the gunshots and went
outside the store, where he was met
with a message from John.

Doc Spray: "I warned him is what
he said to me. I mean he looked me
right in the eye and said I warned him.
And I'm thinking who and what."

Moments later, Spray saw Paten
laying on the ground.

That's when he called 911.

Darlene Wray also works at the

store and watched rescue crews try to
save Paten.

"I figured he'd be ok when I seen
him because I seen him move when I got
here."

Paten didn't make it - he died
during surgery at Roanoke Memorial
Hospital.

"The Wrays say that John had just
married Paten's ex wife Janice a few
weeks ago. And they've been joking
about the marriage here at the
convenience store."

"I'd horse around with John about
getting married and I'd say well, how's
the honeymoon?"

Neighbors say the marriage may
have sparked the shooting.

Still, workers at the One Stop
say they never saw any signs of trouble
between the two men.

"They're always joking around.
They're always coming in and that's

what's weird. I never would have
pictured John doing that."

"These two guys come in the
convenience store all the time, never
had no trouble out of either one of
them. It's just hard to believe that
it happened here."

(nats)

With the two rivals locked in a pitched

battle, Edwards' endorsement carries a
lot of weight.

What's the big attraction? Besides a
handful of delegates, Edwards' base has
always been low-income voters,
especially those in rural areas, and
those are JUST the kind of votes that
figure to swing key races.

Voters in Hawaii and Wisconsin will
have their say tomorrow. The Clinton
camp all but concedes Hawaii where
Obama was born, but latest polls show
they've made up ground in Wisconsin,
where Obama holds a slight edge.

(nats)

While the democrats battle it out, John
McCain says it doesn't matter who wins.

(SOT JOHN MCCAIN quick font courtesy

ABC/"This Week"): "I CAN OUT-CAMPAIGN
THEM AND I CAN OUT-DEBATE THEM."

Even though Mike Huckabee is still in
the race, the Arizona Senator has all
but clinched the nomination. But he's
had trouble getting hard-core

conservatives behind him.

Without solid support from the vast
majority of republicans, McCain knows
he doesn't stand a chance in November.

(SOT JOHN MCCAIN - no font - from This

Week but over CBS pix): "WE'VE GOT TO
RE-UNITE THE PARTY, WE'VE GOT TO
RE-ENERGIZE THE PARTY. AND I'M PREPARED
TO DO THAT. WE'VE GOT PLENTY OF TIME,
BUT I WON'T WASTE A DAY."

(oncam)

And McCain will get a conservative
boost today....when he'll pick up a
major endorsement from the first
President Bush in Houston.

OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Franklin << When shots were fired at the One

County Stop Convenience store Saturday night,
(END SOT) it didn't take long for neighbors in

the Doe Run and Tripple Creek Road area

to take notice.

Mickey Bowles: "I was sitting in
my living room and I heard a loud gun
shot and then I saw Paten laying in the
parking lot."

Franklin County Sheriff's
Officials say 49-year-old Paten Hodges
was shot with a high power rifle by his
nephew, John Hodges.

NATS OF CASH REGISTER

Doc Spray was working inside the
convenience store when the shooting
happened.

He heard the gunshots and went
outside the store, where he was met
with a message from John.

Doc Spray: "I warned him is what
he said to me. I mean he looked me
right in the eye and said I warned him.
And I'm thinking who and what."

Moments later, Spray saw Paten
laying on the ground.

That's when he called 911.

Darlene Wray also works at the
store and watched rescue crews try to
save Paten.

"I figured he'd be ok when I seen
him because I seen him move when I got
here."

Paten didn't make it - he died
during surgery at Roanoke Memorial
Hospital.

"The Wrays say that John had just
married Paten's ex wife Janice a few
weeks ago. And they've been joking
about the marriage here at the
convenience store."

"I'd horse around with John about
getting married and I'd say well, how's
the honeymoon?"

Neighbors say the marriage may
have sparked the shooting.

Still, workers at the One Stop
say they never saw any signs of trouble
between the two men.

"They're always joking around.

They're always coming in and that's
what's weird. I never would have
pictured John doing that."

"These two guys come in the
convenience store all the time, never
had no trouble out of either one of
them. It's just hard to believe that
it happened here."
