Virginia Tech students gathered last
night at Alumni Mall to show support to
the N-I-U community.


Students lit candles, sang songs, and
held a moment of silence for the
victims.


After the vigil, we talked to
President Charles Steger who shared
with us his feelings about what
happened last week in Illinois.

In the coming days, the university


plans to send care packages to N-I-U as
well as a Hokie stone painted in that
school's colors of red and black.

circulating petitions, and encouraging

Bowers served as Mayor from 1992
until 2000.


He's expected to make a formal

Friday Meanwhile, a Roanoke County
forest fire is completely contained.


The Green Ridge Mountain
Fire is now about 75-percent under
control, according to county
firefighters.


That means that while the fire is
no longer spreading, deris at the
center continues to burn.


A state helicopter began dropping
water on the fire yesterday morning.

vigil on Alumni Mall in front of the
Torgersen Bridge.


This comes just days after a
gunmen opened fire in a classroom at
N-I-U, killing five students.

who kill intruders in their homes.


The resident would have to prove
he or she faced imminent danger of
bodily harm.


Senators on the Courts of Justice
Committee say they don't think the bill
is necessary-- since they've never

of lethal force against intruders.


Opponents of the bill call it an
excuse for residents to shoot first and
ask questions later.

revived by the House version of the
state budget.

on online child sexual predators.


The House Appropriations
Committee included one and a quarter
million dollars in the House budget to
partially fund the law.


Officials say the money will
allow a 100- percent increase in cases
investigated and arrests made.


It will also allow police to
purchase high- speed internet and
electronic forensic equipment.

Martinsville is cutting back his
late-night hours because of two
shootings on his property in less than
six months.

killing Corey Meshawn Brandon this
weekend in the parking lot of Deep Blue
Sea Seafood Restaurant.


*CG locator Martinsville Witnesses say the two had a run-in :03 Saturday evening at a night club across
the street and it carried over to the
restaurant.


On weekends, a large crowd
gathers in this area which is why


police had three officers there that
night.


But even their presence wasn't
enough.

The owner of the restaurant says
instead of staying open until four A-M,
he'll likely shut down before the club
across the street closes.


In September, another man was
shot inside the restaurant.


Police say he's on life support.

through today. This will keep cool
temperatures and breezy conditions
around through mid-week. A WIND
ADVISORY is in effect until 6pm this
evening for a good portion of our area.
We could see wind gusts as high as
50mph. Skies will remain partly to
mostly sunny today with highs in the
upper 40s to near 50.. Light flurries
and snow showers are possible today in


the western mountains. Any accumulation
would be light. Winds will remain busy
tonight, with gusts as high as 30mph.
Wednesday is still, with a slight
chance (20%) of a passing rain/snow
shower. Thursday through Saturday, a
series of disturbances will introduce
more clouds and a better chance of
rain/snow showers. Highs will reach the
