June, 2004 As we first saw back in 20-04,
V-Dot crews and its contractors
increasingly work at night.

The reason is simple, there's
less of an impact on traffic simply
because there are fewer vehicles on the
road after eleven o'clock.

But working at night does come
with some risks. That's why workers
typically put up lights and wear

reflective vests.

Those precautions though, can
only do so much.

UNPRECEDENTED. (runs :02)

TRACK: The missile employs infra-red
sensors that will guide it towards the

satellite. The satellite lost power ...
almost since the time it launched in

December of 2006. It's orbited
200-miles above the earth, but in
recent

weeks, it's been quickly falling.

(Super: Teri Okita/Reporting) ( :27 -

STANDUP BRIDGE: (10:07) The spy
satellite is about the size of a school
bus

... the ballistic missile, the size of
a chair. That would seem to be an

easy target ... except the navy says
the real target is the satellite's fuel

tank. (runs :11)

TRACK: That tank is only 40-inches in

dangerous if the satellite comes

crashing to earth.

THEIR STATED EXPLANATION IS THEY'RE

TRYING TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM A
SAFETY RISK. (runs :13)

TRACK: The missile will be hurtling
towards its target at a combined speed
of

22-thousand miles-an-hour. The
collision should destroy the satellite
and

send all that toxic fuel into space.

(Geoff Morrell/Pentagon Spokesman)

SOT: (7:52:26) IT MAY TAKE A DAY OR

MORE TO DETERMINE IF THE HYDRAZINE TANK

TRACK: Once the satellite comes in
range, the navy will have only seconds
to

launch the missile. If it misses, it's
got two others that can be fired off on

another night. The navy has a 10-day
window to get a successful shot before

the satellite enters the atmosphere.

Center. It's an active pattern coming
up over the next couple days, as a wave
of low pressure systems traverse the
region. Light snow will continue in the
Highlands and Greenbrier through this
evening, where 2-4 inches of snow is
possible. Look for slightly lesser
amounts in Tazewell, Grayson and the
western mountains. Winds will begin to
diminish some overnight as well, with

lows in the 20s. Most of Thursday
looks cloudy but it gets a little
interesting late Thursday night.
Another low will usher in snow showers
around 11pm Thursday in the west, then
spread east during the night. While it
will begin as snow, look for a change
to freezing rain before tapering off
late Friday. Snow amounts look pretty
light, with most areas seeing less than
a quarter of an inch. Freezing rain
appears to be the main concern with a
light glaze possible. This would cause
some travel problems Friday. Nature
settles things down over the weekend.
We may have a brief period of wintry
mix early Saturday morning, with
increasing sun during the afternoon.
Sunday is warmer and drier. WEDNESDAY
NIGHT: Rain/snow shower. Winds
Diminish. Low: 24 THURSDAY: Clouds
with snow/sleet developing during the
evening. High: 36 THURSDAY NIGHT:
Light snow, changing to freezing rain.

convert the tough bank shot off the

RUNS=2:37 (END SOT)

OQ=...make the cut." << The Virginia High School League is
(END SOT) once again poised to crown state

basketball champs in Richmond next
month at the VCU Seigel Center.
Another trip to the Richmond facility
where last year the parking was scarce
and the championship day seating was a
disaster is not on Triple A's most
recommended excursions.

This year the madness will be even more
spread out with the tournament
beginning on Tuesday and extending all
the way until late Saturday night.

The big reason for the extended stay in
the City of Monuments has to do with
the VHSL buying into the present day
philosophy that everyone needs a
trophy.

The year Group A schools in our area
have been split in half in two
divisions - making it possible for not
one but two state champs to emerge from
the schools in the Commonwealth that
have the smallest enrollments.

MIKE GOAD/JAMES RIVER HEAD COACH:

Region C - the predominant Group A
region in our area has taken the let
everybody be a playoff team whether
they earned it or not mantra a step
farther. All 12 teams in Region C
Division One are already invited to the
Regional tournament - no matter what
happens this week in their respective
district tournament. That means -
among other things - that three girls'
teams - Holston, Pocahontas and
Covington will be a step away from the
state tournament even though none of

three schools has won a single game
this year.

VHSL executive director Ken Tilley
knows more playoff games mean more
money - but you're kidding yourself if
you think it will help these smaller
schools win more titles. In basketball
- talent and not numbers are important.
You only need five players at a time -
and one of the state's best basketball
schools - Altavista - is still in the
smaller group in Region B. That is the
power region in the state - and even
with the split - schools there are
three times as big as the ones on the
western end of the state - meaning that
no matter how you slice it the same
teams are always going to make the cut.
