where the construction equipment was
operating.

Police say a Hummer H3 hit a
backhoe, and then a Chevrolet Avalanche
hit the rear of the Hummer... pushing
both into the back of a dump truck.

The driver of the truck, Richard
L. Slone of Vinton, was standing behind
the equipment. He was hit and killed.

Police have charged the driver of
the Hummer, 42- year- old Tracie
Nininger, with involuntary
manslaughter, and driving under the
influence.

An arrest warrant indicates her

blood alcohol level was between point
1-5 and point- 2-0. That's about twice
the legal limit.

The driver of the Avalanche,
Jeffrey S. Dupree, was also charged
with driving under the influence, and

The Space Shuttle and its seven
astronauts breezed onto runway 15 at

morning.

"WE APPRECIATE ALL THE GREAT HELP AND
SUPPORT FROM THE FOLKS HERE AT KENNEDY
AND ALL OVER NASA."

For the astronauts it was not only
difficult to connect a European lab to
the International Space Station-but
also because they were away from their
families.

STEVE FRICK/ATLANTIS COMMANDER:

THEY HAD A VERY TOUGH TIME FOR THE LAST
TWO WEEKS AS WE ARE UP IN SPACE AND
THEY ARE NOT COMFORTABLE OR HAPPY UNTIL
WE GO HOME."

It was harder for Dan Tani whose mother
was killed in a car accident while he
was on the space station.

Faulty fuel gauges on the Shuttle
delayed his return in December..

Though the others are walking-- Zero
gravity for four months has made it
difficult for Tani to get around."

BILL GERSTENMAIER/SPACEFLIGHT DIRECTOR
"HE'S KINDA TYPICAL OF RETURNING
EXPEDITION CREW MEMBER BUT HE'S JUST
GREAT."

DREW LEVINSON/KENNEDY SPACE CENTER:

THE PENTAGON WANTED THE SPACE SHUTTLE
BACK ON EARTH FOR SAFETY SAKE. THE NAVY
IS PLANNING TO TO SHOOT DOWN A CRIPPLED
SATELLITE. SO THERE WAS NO WAY THEY
WERE GOING TO RISK A SHOT WITH ATLANTIS
STILL UP THERE.

For the first time-a missile will be
fired from a ship in the Pacific to
destroy the satellite orbiting 150
miles above the earth.

BILL HARWOOD/CBS NEWS CONSULTANT:

PEOPLE DON'T WORRY ABOUT DEBRIS
FALLING. YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE
GETTING HIT BY LIGHTENING.

But it's the toxic fuel on board that
may cause problems if it crashes into a

populated area.

Bad weather could delay the
operation-but because the Military is
keeping almost everything a secret, we
won't know it's over....until it's
over.

As for NASA it's already looking ahead
three weeks. Endeavour is on the pad
set to go.

<< Good evening, I'm meteorologist
Robin Reed in the SkyTracker7 Forecast
Center. It's an active pattern coming
up over the next couple days, as a wave
of low pressure systems traverse the
region. Light snow will continue in the
Highlands and Greenbrier through this
evening, where 2-4 inches of snow is

possible. Look for slightly lesser
amounts in Tazewell, Grayson and the
western mountains. Winds will begin to
diminish some overnight as well, with
lows in the 20s. Most of Thursday
looks cloudy but it gets a little
interesting late Thursday night.
Another low will usher in snow showers
around 11pm Thursday in the west, then
spread east during the night. While it
will begin as snow, look for a change
to freezing rain before tapering off
late Friday. Snow amounts look pretty
light, with most areas seeing less than
a quarter of an inch. Freezing rain
appears to be the main concern with a
light glaze possible. This would cause
some travel problems Friday. Nature
settles things down over the weekend.
We may have a brief period of wintry
mix early Saturday morning, with
increasing sun during the afternoon.
Sunday is warmer and drier. WEDNESDAY
NIGHT: Rain/snow shower. Winds
Diminish. Low: 24 THURSDAY: Clouds
with snow/sleet developing during the
evening. High: 36 THURSDAY NIGHT:

mstevens@wdbj7.com High school district basketball
tournaments are well underway this week

from one end of the state to the other.
In past couple of years the
tournaments have gotten somewhat
watered down, with more than the normal
two teams advancing to regional play.

This year the desire to expand
the playoffs is comical.

OQ=...make the cut." << The Virginia High School League is
(END SOT) once again poised to crown state

basketball champs in Richmond next
month at the VCU Seigel Center.
Another trip to the Richmond facility
where last year the parking was scarce
and the championship day seating was a
disaster is not on Triple A's most

recommended excursions.

This year the madness will be even more
spread out with the tournament
beginning on Tuesday and extending all
the way until late Saturday night.

The big reason for the extended stay in
the City of Monuments has to do with
the VHSL buying into the present day
philosophy that everyone needs a
trophy.

The year Group A schools in our area
have been split in half in two
divisions - making it possible for not
one but two state champs to emerge from
the schools in the Commonwealth that
have the smallest enrollments.

MIKE GOAD/JAMES RIVER HEAD COACH:

Region C - the predominant Group A
region in our area has taken the let
everybody be a playoff team whether
they earned it or not mantra a step
farther. All 12 teams in Region C
Division One are already invited to the
Regional tournament - no matter what

happens this week in their respective
district tournament. That means -
among other things - that three girls'
teams - Holston, Pocahontas and
Covington will be a step away from the
state tournament even though none of
three schools has won a single game
this year.

VHSL executive director Ken Tilley
knows more playoff games mean more
money - but you're kidding yourself if
you think it will help these smaller
schools win more titles. In basketball
- talent and not numbers are important.
You only need five players at a time -
and one of the state's best basketball
schools - Altavista - is still in the
smaller group in Region B. That is the
power region in the state - and even
with the split - schools there are
three times as big as the ones on the
western end of the state - meaning that
no matter how you slice it the same
teams are always going to make the cut.

This past weekend, the Ohio third
grader made a three-pointer from near
half court--- about 30 feet from the

basket, with just seconds left in the
first quarter.

Griffin's dad is a T-V news
photographer, who caught the shot when
he stopped by to watch the game.
