GRAPHIC=Sloan The family of a Vinton man who

was killed by an alleged drunk driver
is searching for answers.

Richard Slone was killed
yesterday morning while working in a
Roanoke County construction zone.

Two drivers are facing charges

related to the accident.

It happened on Electric Road,
near Tanglewood Mall where a contractor
was working on a water main.

A Hummer H3, driven by 42- year-
old Tracie D. Nininger (NY-ning-er) ran
into a backhoe.

Then a Chevy Avalanche driven by
32- year- old Jeffrey S. Dupree ran
into the back of the Hummer.

Slone was standing near the
equipment when he was struck and
killed.

Nininger is now facing charges of
involuntary manslaughter and driving
under the influence.

Dupree was charged with driving
under the influence, and refusing to
take a breath test.

The reason is simple, there's
less of an impact on traffic simply
because there are fewer vehicles on the
road after eleven o'clock.

But working at night does come
with some risks. That's why workers
typically put up lights and wear
reflective vests.

Those precautions though, can

Another low will usher in snow showers
during the evening, then spread east
during the night. While it will begin
as snow and sleet, look for a change to
freezing rain before tapering off late
Friday. Snow amounts look fairly light,
with most areas seeing less than an
inch or two. Freezing rain appears to
be the main concern with a light glaze
possible. This would cause some travel
problems Friday. Nature settles things
down over the weekend. We may have a

It's not Mission Accomplished just yet.

A missile launched from a Navy cruiser
off Hawaii did strike a crippled and

potentially dangerous spy satellite
last night and officials are confident

..but it's too soon to tell if the load
of toxic fuel on-board has been

destroyed.

ANALYST): "I THINK WITH THE KIND OF
IMPACT

VELOCITIES WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE -
EXTREMELY HIGH SPEEDS - IF THEY HIT THE

SATELLITE, THERE'S PROBABLY GOOD REASON
TO BELIEVE THEY HAD SUCCESS."

They've have had their eye on the
billion-dollar piece of reconnaissance
gear

since it malfunctioned shortly after
launching into orbit more than a year

ago...and it was coming down one way or
another.

Every time it circled the earth - once
every 90 minutes or so - it sank lower

and lower...and would have entered the
atmosphere in early March and broken

up.

But the big worry WASN'T pieces of the
bus-sized craft crashing

down....Authorities were instead
concerned about the thousand-pound tank
full

of toxic hydrazine fuel. That could be
a BIG problem if it rained down on a

populated area.

The Pentagon insists the operation was
necessary but it did make for a great

opportunity to test out the missile
interception system....it's first real

world use with an out-of-this-world
target.

suspects the Pentagon had other

They want Washington to release all
information about the missile strike
and

related to an accident that killed a
man while he was working in a Roanoke
County construction zone.

Electric Road, near Tanglewood Mall
where a contractor was working on a
water main.

A Hummer H3, driven by 42- year-
old Tracie D. Nininger (NY-ning-er) ran
into a backhoe.

Then a Chevy Avalanche driven by
32- year- old Jeffrey S. Dupree ran
into the back of the Hummer.

Richard Slone was standing near
the equipment when he was struck and
killed.

Nininger is now facing charges of
involuntary manslaughter and driving
under the influence.

Dupree was charged with driving
under the influence, and refusing to
take a breath test.

Fork in the Alley began its
process in August and became certified
Green in late January.

It's only the first second
restaurant in Virginia to earn the

destinction and the first in Roanoke.

Among the requirements, getting
rid of all styrofoam and recycling as
much as the community allows.

eliminating the use of paper towels in
the bathrooms and replacing it with
high violocity, energy effiecient air
hand dryers. In addition, motion
detectors now replace the light
switches.

They also use energy efficient
equipment and most of the food is
cooked in a wood burning brick oven.

In all, nine environmental steps
have been completed.

was killed by an alleged drunk driver
is searching for answers.

Richard Slone was killed
yesterday morning while working in a
Roanoke County construction zone.

Two drivers are facing charges
related to the accident.

near Tanglewood Mall where a contractor
was working on a water main.

A Hummer H3, driven by 42- year-
old Tracie D. Nininger (NY-ning-er) ran
into a backhoe.

Then a Chevy Avalanche driven by
32- year- old Jeffrey S. Dupree ran
into the back of the Hummer.

Slone was standing near the
equipment when he was struck and
killed.

Nininger is now facing charges of
involuntary manslaughter and driving
under the influence.

Dupree was charged with driving
under the influence, and refusing to
take a breath test.

The reason is simple, there's
less of an impact on traffic simply
because there are fewer vehicles on the

road after eleven o'clock.

But working at night does come
with some risks. That's why workers
typically put up lights and wear
reflective vests.

Those precautions though, can

meetings aimed at identifying needs and
cracks in the system.

Making changes became a top
priority.

The House budget includes 42-
million dollars for mental health.

Of that nearly 34- million will

and management took four additional

the steps are things other restaurants
