OQ=Tim Saunders, News 7, Bedford County << When you hear the words "Downtown
(END SOT) Moneta," you probably think of images

like this: empty storefronts, roads
with virtually no traffic.

But developer George Aznaveorian
has a different vision.

George Aznaveorian "We lost all
that growth and the momentum of what
that old village was so we thought it
would be nice to resurrect as if it
would have continued in today's times."

Aznavorian is building a new
"Downtown Moneta."

A project that mixes upscale
restaurants and shopping with
apartments and townhomes.

It's designed to be a pedestrian
friendly neighborhood where residents
can walk from their homes to the local
businesses.

Jody Lyons is helping sell and
market the project.

Jody Lyons: "People are excited
about having everything convenient
where they can just walk across the
street."

For years, most of the retail and
restaurants at Smith Mountain Lake have
been going up on the west side here in
Franklin County. But thanks to a new
sewage treatment facility on the
Bedford side, developers are looking to
the east.

"It's tough to have a company
come in to an area and say we've got to
put you on Septic. We have public
sewer and the infrastructure to support
that growth."

Drive down Route 122, and you
can't miss the construction. Several
major projects are going up in Moneta -
including a new Amphitheater on this
land near Hendrick's Store Road.

Even with all the new, some of
the old will stay.

Aznavorian is hoping to connect
his project with the original downtown
Moneta - and hopefully bring some life
back to these empty streets.

"There's a lot of history about
Moneta so we wanted to tie that

together."

It may take another two to three
years to finish the downtown.

But once it's complete,
developers are hoping to bring visitors
and residents back to what was once a
thriving stop on the way to the lake.

The increase would occur

that would go towards maintaining
roads.

The increase passed the Senate
comfortably...

The Democratic candidates aren't
exactly welcoming Ralph Nader to the
2008

presidential race.

(SOT BARACK OBAMA): "I THINK PEOPLE

REALIZE THAT RALPH DID NOT KNOW WHAT HE

WAS TALKING ABOUT."

Many democrats blame the long-time
consumer advocate for swinging the 2000

election to the republicans and don't
want a repeat. But the veteran

presidential candidate insists there's
plenty of room for everyone.

(SOT RALPH NADER mandatory courtesy CBS

News "Up To The Minute" 213508):

"EVERYBODY SHOULD HAVE AN EQUAL RIGHT
TO RUN FOR OFFICE...AND NOT BE DEGRADED

WITH A SECOND-CLASS CITIZENSHIP
LABEL."

(NATSOT CLINTON SUPPORTER): "HILLARY,

WE'RE GONNA PUT YOU OVER THE TOP."

(CLINTON): "YES, WE ARE."

But Hillary Clinton's got bigger
problems than Ralph Nader. Her
campaign

spent a lot of money early on -
thinking the nomination would be
already

wrapped up - and now she's running
low.

After being outspent 5 to 1 on T-V ads
in Wisconsin - she's been forced to

sacrifice more and more campaign time
for fund-raisers...even as polls in

Texas and Ohio show any lead she once
had slipping away.

(SOT HILLARY CLINTON 135719): "THINK

ABOUT GETTING EVERYBODY YOU CAN - YOUR

FRIENDS, YOUR FAMILY!"

(nats)

Barack Obama took advantage by
continuing his push across the Midwest.
Trade

has become a centerpiece of his
campaign in Ohio....where many blame
trade

agreements like NAFTA for losing jobs
and closing factories...And he hit

Clinton for her support of that
agreement while her husband was in the
White

House.

(SOT BARACK OBAMA 153958): "THE NOTION

YOU CAN SELECTIVELY PICK WHAT YOU TAKE

CREDIT FOR AND THEN RUN AWAY FROM WHAT
ISN'T POLITICALLY CONVENIENT - THAT

DOESN'T MAKE SENSE."

(oncam)

And Clinton's looking for a big win in
tomorrow's Ohio debate. Some in her

camapign think that could swing the
state's increasingly tight race.

one is using a room.

Same goes for computers.. turn
